The third season of Lisa McGee’s Derry Girls has tied with Indian comedian Vir Das’ stand-up special, Vir Das: Landing, for the comedy award at the International Emmys.
Channel 4 series Derry Girls, written by Lisa McGee, has tied for the 2023 International Emmy Award in Comedy, with Vir Das: Landing, the fourth stand-up special of Indian comedian Vir Das. Winners were announced last night, November 20th, at the 51st International Emmy Awards Gala in New York.
“The whole team are absolutely thrilled. What an incredible way to end the Derry Girls journey!" Creator Lisa McGee and producer Brian J. Falconer told IFTN, when speaking about their International Emmy Award win.
Over the course of three seasons Derry Girls followed the personal exploits of a 16-year-old girl and her family and friends during the Troubles in early 1990s Northern Ireland, taking inspiration from writer Lisa McGee’s own experiences growing up during this time.
Derry Girls came to an end last year with a 45-minute special episode titled The Agreement, set in 1998 during the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. The series has received numerous awards since, including two IFTAs and three BAFTAs. IFTN sat down with Lisa McGee earlier this year to discuss the show’s conclusion, and what she plans to do next.
Vir Das: Landing, a Netflix comedy special from Vir Das, sees the comedian reflecting on growing up in India and his move to America.
