Ahead of this Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles, we look at the Irish hopefuls in contention for this year’s Academy Awards.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced at a live ceremony this Sunday, March 12th, televised live on ABC in the US and Sky Cinema in Ireland - broadcast begins at midnight.

RTÉ will broadcast the ceremony on RTÉ2 on Monday night at 9:30pm.

Among the frontrunners of this year’s nomination is Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy drama, The Banshees of Inisherin, which secured a total of 9 nominations including Best Motion Picture and four first-time nominations for each of the Irish leading ensemble cast.

Irish actors Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson, and Barry Keoghan received their first ever Academy Award nomination earlier this year, but each face stiff competition from the cast of Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (EEAAO). The bilingual Chinese-American feature emerged as outright favourite following the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) where the cast made history with four awards and the Producers Guild of America (PGA) awards where it picked up Best Picture.

At the SAG Awards, Everything Everywhere All At Once emerged with the Motion Picture Cast award, as well as personal accolades for three members of the cast including Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

However, the Banshees will still hold belief following their BAFTA and Golden Globe successes with wins for McDonagh and Colin Farrell at the Golden Globes, while Barry Keoghan, Kerry Condon, and McDonagh picked up awards at the BAFTAs last month.

McDonagh, who is nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, previously told IFTN that he wrote each of the four leading characters with the specific actors in mind, something he has only done once before for Sam Rockwell and Francis McDormand in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

In 2018, both McDormand and Rockwell were also nominated for their performances and ultimately went on to receive respective Academy Award, a feat that Farrell, Condon, Gleeson, or Keoghan will hope replicate on Sunday.

Colm Bairéad’s history-making An Cailín Ciúin  became the first ever Irish language feature film to be nominated for an Academy Award, but hopes to pull off a major upset by beating Netflix favourite All Quiet On The Western Front.

The five films in competition for the Best International Feature Film award were shortlisted from a hugely competitive category that included 92 submissions from across the world.

The film has been on an extraordinary journey since its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February, racking up a host of awards including the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury for Best Film, seven Irish Film and Television Academy Awards including Best Film, and a multitude of Jury and Audience Awards from film festivals across the globe.

Alongside Colin Farrell in the Best Actor category is fellow Irish actor and Aftersun star, Paul Mescal who also picked up his first Academy Award nomination. Mescal and Farrell face huge competition from favourites Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Austin Butler (Elvis) with Bill Nighy (Living) also nominated.

Having made the shortlist of 5 from over 200 qualified short films, Northern Irish short An Irish Goodbye is among the frontrunners for the Best Live-Action Short Film. Tom Berkeley and Ross White’s film picked up the Best British Short Film at the BAFTA Film Awards last month and is nominated for an IFTA in May.

In the craft categories, Irish editor Jonathan Redmond will compete in the Best Achievement in Film Editing category alongside Matt Villa for their work on Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, while Richard Banehan is in contention for Best Achievement in Visual Effects for Avatar: The Way of Water, for which he is nominated alongside Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett.

The 95th Academy Awards takes place on Sunday, March 12th.
