Matilda star Alisha Weir joins cast of Brian Durnin's Spilt Milk
02 Mar 2023 : Lucien Waugh-Daly
Alisha Weir
Alisha Weir, the breakout Irish star of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical, will star in Spilt Milk, the feature directorial debut of Brian Durnin, that will shoot in Ireland this summer.

Spilt Milk is set in Dublin in 1984 and follows eleven-year-old Bobby O’Brien, a precocious and energetic boy obsessed with becoming a great detective like his hero television sensation Kojak. Set against the backdrop of 1980’s, working class, inner-city Dublin, Bobby and his pal Nell torment their family, friends, and neighbours as they set up their own private investigation enterprise. But when Bobby’s brother Oisin disappears, this story of innocence and adventure stumbles into the murky world of criminality and addiction. Weir will play the best friend character.

The film will also star Danielle Galligan, who stars in the upcoming Lakelands and won the Bingham Ray New Talent Award at last year's Galway Film Fleadh; and Laurence O’Fuarain, who has appeared in The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Cara Loftus wrote the screenplay, which is the first from the inaugural Screen Ireland new writing scheme in 2019 to go into production.

Spilt Milk has been developed and produced with the support of Screen Ireland, and is the first feature produced by Laura McNicholas through her company 925 Productions, and Scottish outfit MTP. MTP will be producing in association with Vico Films, best known for The Young Offenders, and Avar Capital.

McNicholas spoke with IFTN last year about her experience at te Cannes Co-Production Market where Spilt Milk was one of seven projects selected as a spotlight feature under the Tallinn Black Night Film Festival banner.

“Having our feature Spilt Milk selected for the Co Pro Spotlight at the Marche du Film was brilliant as it introduced the project to a greater range of potential partners,” McNicholas told IFTN. “Usually these meetings are one to one in Cannes but its 2021 so unfortunately I was at home… it was still brilliant though as its Cannes and being a focus project means you get the opportunity to pitch to some very exciting sales agents and producers.”

Weir is from Dublin and has done plentiful stage work in addition to playing the eponymous heroine of Matilda, for which she received rave reviews. The film received a cinema release from Sony Pictures in December and will debut on Netflix in the UK and Ireland this summer.
