'Parked', 'Outcast' & 'Soulboy' for Torino
15 Nov 2010 :
Soul Boy
Torino Film Festival audience members will be among the first in the world to see Darragh Byrne’s ‘Parked’, at its world premiere on December 2nd at the Italian festival. The feature will join other Irish works such as Shimmy Marcus’ ‘Soulboy’ and Colm McCarthy’s ‘Outcast’. The festival has also chosen to honour ‘The General’ director John Boorman and ‘The Dead’ helmer, John Huston.

Irish/ Finnish co-production, ‘Parked’ is directed by Darragh Byrne (Wide Angle), written by Ciaran Creagh, and features the acting talents of Colm Meaney (The Damned United), Colin Morgan (Merlin), Milka Ahlroth (Twisted Roots), Stuart Graham (Hunger), Michael McElhatton (Happy Ever Afters) and David Wilmott (I Went Down).Fred Daly lives a quiet, lonely life in his car. But that changes when Cathal arrives in a little yellow car and becomes his neighbour. A dope-smoking 21 year old with positive attitude, Cathal seems determined to make Fred sort his life out. And it works. As Cathal’s infectious energy rubs off on him, Fred modifies his car into a home, beats the welfare system and makes a friend in Jules, an attractive music teacher who lives alone nearby. But Fred struggles with his pride to tell Jules about his ‘home’ as Cathal’s life is threatened by his escalating drug habit. As they grow closer, the influence of these three outsiders on each other will change their lives.

'Parked' will screen as part of the festival's Mobile Feast, a category where 38 films, none of which have been screened in Italy before, have been chosen from the most interesting on the 2010 international scene.

‘Outcast’, directed and written by Colm McCarthy (Single – Handed) and co-penned by Tom McCarthy, stars James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven), Katie Dicke (Red Road), Ciarán McMenamin (The Last Confession of Alexander Pearce) and Niall Bruton (Uncle Bills Barrel). Set a council estate in Edinburgh, the Fantastic Films and MaKar co-rpoduction intertwines ritual and magic with the doomed relationship between Petronella a Scottish/Romany girl and Fergal her mysterious Irish traveller boyfriend (Bruton). 'Outcast' is one of nine features chosen to screen in the festival's Confidential Report, a category dedicated to horror which, festival organisers feel, is beginning to give signs of life and creativity once again through the works by young filmmakers who take on the genre with very different themes and languages.

Shimmy Marcus’ 'Soul Boy' is set in 1974 against the backdrop of the Northern Soul movement. It stars Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen), alongside Nichola Burley (Street Dance 3D), Felicity Jones (Cemetary Junction), Pat Shortt (Garage), Alfie Allen (Atonement) and Craig Parkinson (Control). Written by Jeff Williams, the feature is produced by Zanzibar Films and Let’s Not Lose It productions. 'Soul Boy' is one of 16 features competing in the festival's Feature Film Competition.

John Boorman, recent IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, will receive the Gran Premio Torino and will be present for a special screening of his 1972 classic, ‘Deliverance’. The festival will also honour John Huston's career and legacy with a retrospective celebrating the director’s entire body of work as a director, and also a selection of films written by Huston or ones in which he performed. Allegra Huston and Tony Huston are among family members who will attend the tribute.

The Torino Film Festival is the second largest film festival in Italy, following the Venice Film Festival and concentrates on ‘young’ cinema with a primary aim of finding and introducing new talents that express the best contemporary trends of international independent cinema.
