New James Joyce Documentary by Blueprint Picture Set to Air on RTÉ – Wednesday, December 13th
12 Dec 2017 : Nathan Griffin
‘James Joyce: A Shout in the Street’ is a co-production between RTÉ, the BBC and ARTE (the French-German cultural channel). The documentary, which is set to air this Wednesday, was produced and written by David Blake-Knox who, given the transient circumstances of Joyce’s life, felt the international dimension seems wholly appropriate.

The documentary was directed by Kieron J. Walsh, and edited by Vinny Beirne.

Post-production took place at Outer Limits in Dun Laoghaire, while it was filmed principally on location in Ireland, but was also shot in Italy, Switzerland, the USA and the UK.

It was produced with the support of the incentives offered for the Irish Film Industry provided by the Government of Ireland.

The contributors that appear on the documentary include writers such as Frank McGuinness, Jeffrey Eugenides, John Banville, Anne Enright, Colm Toibin, David Simon, and Edna O’Brien. The documentary is narrated by Academy Award winning actress, Angelica Heuston, who wanted to do the project due to her personal connection with Joyce, and furthermore Ireland where she spent most of her childhood growing up.

Filming on the project has only recently concluded, having began in June of this year.

David Blake Knox says:

“I suppose I have been interested in Joyce since I first read “The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” while I was still at school. He has been a big influence in my life since then, but I would not class myself as a Joycean fanatic. In making this film, I wanted it to be credible to scholars of Joyce’s work, but also to be accessible and enjoyable to those who have never read a word of his novels. I have been a great admirer of Anjelica Huston's work for many years, and I knew that she had a personal connection with Joyce – and with Ireland, where she spent most her childhood. Her father also had a long-lasting and profound association with Ireland and with Joyce’s work.

Indeed, he helped to secure the famous Martello tower in Sandycove – where the opening episode of “Ulysses” is set – for the Irish nation. Anjelica played the female lead part in her father’s last movie - his wonderful adaptation of Joyce’s short story “The Dead”. She told me that when she first read this story “it spoke to her soul” and her performance in that film is nothing short of sublime. Anjelica has also delivered a memorable performance as Molly Bloom on stage some years ago – so I was absolutely delighted when she agreed to present this documentary. Working with her was a most rewarding experience: she not only brought an extraordinary presence on screen, but her own clear-sighted intelligence – and, of course, that beautiful sonorous voice - to the entire production.”

‘James Joyce: A Shout in the Street’, airs on RTÉ, Wednesday – December 13th at 9:35pm.
