PRODUCTION | 'Calvary' & 'Quirke' Receive Major IFB Boost in latest Funding Round
CALVARY
John Michael McDonagh and Octagon Films have been offered a €975,000 production loan from the Irish Film Board (IFB) for his upcoming feature 'Calvary'. McDonagh was previously given a provisional offer of commitment by the Board in April for the comedy, which stars Brendan Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd, Aidan Gillen and Kelly Reilly and is due to shoot in Ireland in September. Scriptwriter Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary) and IFTA-winning writer Conor McPherson (The Eclipse) have also been granted €450,000 for ‘Quirke’. more

Upcoming History Channel mini-series 'Vikings' has added a host of Irish actors to the cast, with Eric Higgins and Gerard McCarthy landing prominent roles in the World 2000 co-production ahead of filming in Ireland next week. more

Adare Productions have begun production on a fourth series of 'An Jig Gig' for TG4 as well as a brand new series for RTÉ entitled 'Instrumental' involving the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Dance talent show ‘An Jig Gig’ is two weeks into a four-week production and is filming in RTÉ studios in Donnybrook. more

INTERVIEW | Five Minutes with... 'Line Of Duty' Cinematographer Ruairi O'Brien
One of the best reviewed TV series to be screened this year, BBC2 police corruption drama 'Line of Duty' debuted last week with the largest audience for a new show on BBC2 in seven years. Irish cinematographer Ruairi O'Brien (Five Minutes of Heaven) worked on all five episodes of the police corruption thriller, working alongside 'Love/Hate' director David Caffrey on the first three episodes. He talks to IFTN about the series and his recent work on Chris O' Dowd's 'Moone Boy' and BBC thriller 'The Fall'. more

Irish actor Liam Cunningham has been confirmed to star in the special 50th anniversary series of popular BBC sci-fi drama 'Doctor Who'. The 'Game of Thrones' actor will star in an episode written by English screenwriter Mark Gatiss, whose credits include 'Doctor Who' and 'Sherlock', according to the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine. more

Irish co-produced feature film 'This Must Be The Place' has won the best director prize at Italy's Silver Ribbons film awards. Director Paolo Sorrentino took the award for the film that was partly shot in Dublin during August 2010 and featured Sean Penn as a retired musician who finds redemption by pursuing a Nazi war criminal. more
