AWARDS | Oscar Gives 'The Crush' the Nod
The Crush
Irish short film 'The Crush', from director Michael Creagh has been announced as one of five live action short films nominated for an Academy Award. The Crush'is written and directed by Michael Creagh and produced by Damon Quinn at Purdy Pictures. The story sees an eight year old schoolboy (played by newcomer Oran Creagh) fall in love with his teacher, Miss Purdy. more
FINANCE | Section 481 in Place until 2015
Mary Hanafin
In a statement made on January 25th Mary Hanafin, T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, announced the decision of the Irish government to extend the film and television tax investment scheme, Section 481 to the end of 2015. The scheme's outlines had been amended in 2008 when its previous closing date had been moved to 2012. more
AWARDS | Simon Delaney to Host 2011 IFTAs

IFTA has announced that Irish actor Simon Delaney will host the 8th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards. Simon will follow in the footsteps of James Nesbitt, Ryan Tubridy and last year's host, Victoria Smurfit in fronting the awards ceremony which will be broadcast live on February 12th. more
INTERVIEW | Casting Ros Hubbard in a Good Light
Ros Hubbard is a world renowned casting director having worked on hugely successful films such as 'The Commitments', 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy and 'Father Ted' with her family. The programme for the 9th annual Jameson Dublin International Film Festival has been announced and will see Irish and International guests come to Dublin to support features such as , 'The Usual Suspects', 'Oranges and Sunshine', 'The Duel' and 'Potiche' which will close the festival on February 27th. more

EMPLOYMENT| Job Losses in BBC NI Online Departments
The BBC has this week announced that it is to reduce its online budget by a quarter, resulting in approximately 360 job losses, four to seven of which will be in its Northern Ireland departments. Discussions are now beginning between staff and unions as to the job losses. more
FESTIVALS| Sundance Deals for 'The Guard'& 'Knuckle'
It has proved a very successful year for Irish film at the Sundance Film Festival with Sony Pictures Classics closing a major US and Latin American rights deal to Element Pictures''The Guard'and Revolver Entertainment snapping the Irish and UK rights to Ian Palmer's feature doc, 'Knuckle', the international rights of which sold to ContentFilm International. more
REP-BODIES| Pat Carey is new Minister for Communications
Minister Pat Carey TD has been named as Minister Eamon Ryan's successor in the role of Irish Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources following the resignation of the latter on January 23rd when Ireland's Green Party officially withdrew from government.more

Irish talent features prominently in Screen Daily's list of 'Hot 50 Films for 2011'. PRODUCTION | Joe Egan is 'On the Ropes'
Former Irish heavyweight boxing champion Joe Egan has teamed up with former martial arts expert, Mark Noyce to star in a new comedy feature titled 'On the Ropes' which is currently shooting in the UK. The film follows a local documentary maker who is covering a news story for regional TV on a 'proper fighting gym', run by Joe. more
FUNDING | IFB Signature Short Films Announced
The Irish Film Board has announced the five films it has selected that have been shortlisted as part of their fourth annual Signatures Shorts funding scheme. These are Calico Pictures' 'Two Hearts'; Fastnet Films''Mikayla W.M.D'; Lovely Productions''Foxes'; Red Rage Productions' 'The Hatch' and 'Cluck'from Michael Lavelle and Rory Dungan. more
PLANNING | High Court Allows RTÉ land zoning review appeal
The High Court has granted RTÉ leave to seek a judicial review of the Dublin City Council decision concerning aspects of the 'Z15' zoning assigned to RTÉ's lands at Donnybrook in the recently adopted Dublin City Development Plan 2011 to 2017. RTÉ previously received a 10-year planning consent for the phased construction works associated with RTÉ Project 2025 from the planning authorities. more

DISTRIBUTION | 'Savage'Available to Rent
Brendan Muldowney's debut feature, 'Savage' has just become available for rental on DVD in Ireland and the UK through High Fliers Films. The critically successful and IFTA winning film will become available to buy on DVD from March 14th. It has a rating of 18 in Ireland and 15 in the UK. more
BROADCAST | TG4 Goes in Search of 'Feis and Blood'
A new series from Adare Productions will start on Sunday, January 30th on TG4. 'Feis and Blood', presented by Sile Seoighe will begin a 13 episode search for Ireland's most entertaining family having auditioned over 300 entertaining families, 80 of whom take part in the series, directed by Brian Graham (The Ex-Files). more
