The Rose of Tralee on RTÉ One was the most-watched programme on any channel available in Ireland so far this year. A peak of over one million viewers saw London Rose Clare Kambamettu crowned the 52nd Rose of Tralee on Tuesday, August 26th. Hosted for the first time by a native Kerry-man in the shape of Dáithi O'Sé, the two day event was watched by an average of 916,300 people. more |

INTERVIEW | Niall McKay Talks San Fran Irish Film Fest |
Niall McKay founded the San Francisco Irish Film Festival in 2004. The festival, which takes place this year from the 23rd to the 25th of September, looks to present the best in contemporary Irish cinema, celebrating everything from features to documentaries to Irish language films. IFTN talked to the festival's founder and filmmaker about the running of the event and the changing face of Irish film.

TRAINING | Michael Lavelle Shoots Berlinale Campus Short |
Irish filmmaker Michael Lavelle wrapped production on his latest short film on Monday, August 23rd. The short (which is, as of yet, untitled) was chosen as one of only five projects for the final of the Berlin Today Award 2011; the Berlinale Talent Campus' short film competition.

DISTRIBUTION | 'Pyjama Girls' Returns to IFI, Still Films in Spotlight |
'Pyjama Girls', Maya Derrington's new feature documentary will return to the IFI for an exclusive release today, August 20th. The project looks to capture the ups and downs of working class teenage life behind the enigmatic and subversive statement of wearing pyjamas in public. Still Films' recent work will be further marked with the world premiere of Paul Rowley's experimental feature, 'The Rooms' and his documentary 'Seaview'. Finally Tuesday, August 24th will see a 'Still Films in Conversation' event take place where all three projects will be discussed.

The first weekend in September will see the release of two new productions from Irish writer/director Shimmy Marcus (Headrush). September 3rd marks the long-awaited release of his Northern Soul feature 'Soul Boy' across screens in UK & Ireland, whilst new comedy series 'Mattie' starring Pat Shortt which Shimmy helmed debuts on RTÉ1 on September 5th.

BROADCAST | NI Viewing Levels Up 5% in Ofcom Report

On 20 August, Ofcom published its seventh annual Communications Market report. In relation to Northern Ireland, the report says whilst average viewing levels have increased there by 5% since last year, NI audiences still watch less TV than the UK average. The report further found that UK channels contributed towards the first ever annual fall in the number of UK television channels.

FESTIVALS | Darklight Festival Unveils Early Highlights

Dublin's Darklight Film Festival has announced the participants for the Heroes Edition Guest Programmers for the festival which takes place in October. Festival Director Nicky Gogan has also announced that Lance Weiler will return to the festival this year as Symposium Key Note speaker. Early bird tickets are currently available for the event and participants are being accepted for Tyrell's 'My Environment, My Film' workshop and competition event. more |
