INTERVIEW | Stokes Passing SPI Torch to Galavan

Sean Stokes' handed over the role of CEO of the Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) to Barbara Galavan on Tuesday, August 24th. Having come to the end of his term as CEO Stokes has taken up his new position as MD of Sports and Media Rights International Ltd. IFTN spoke to both Sean and Barbara to talk about the Stokes' time with the producers representative group and the challenges now facing Brabara. more
AWARDS | 'The Tudors' Celebrate at Creative Arts Emmys
The Emmys
The final series of 'The Tudors' saw wins for two of its four nominations at this year's Creative Arts Emmys. Joan Bergin and Susan Cave won the prize in the category of Outstanding Costumes for a Series whilst Tom Conroy, Colman Corish and Crispian Sallis took the Outstanding Art Direction for a Single Camera Series prize. The Awards ceremony took place on Saturday, August 21st. more
FESTIVALS | More Irish Titles Announced for Toronto 2010

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) today announced more projects that will feature in its 2010 event. The festival's line-up will include screenings of several Irish productions and co-productions including Tom Hall's 'Sensation'; Jerzy Skolimowski's 'Essential Killing'; Juanita Wilson's 'As If I Am Not There; Dome Karukoski's 'Lapland Odyssey' (which will enjoy its world premiere at the event) and the previously announced feature documentary, 'The Pipe' from Risteard O'Domhnall. more
PRODUCTION | 'Eco Eye' & 'About the House' Begin Production
Eco Eye
Production got underway late last week on the set of Earth Horizon Productions' 'Eco Eye' and 'About the House'. Both series will film all over the country for the next few months with the former transmitting on RTÉ next January and the latter coming to our television screens late this year. Marcus Stewart (A Burning Question) is the producer for both shows which are presented by Duncan Stewart (The Changing Face of Dublin). more
PRODUCTION | Abú Media Prep 'Clontarf' & 'Mobs Canada'

Abú Media are currently in pre-production with two series, namely 'Mobs Canada', a follow up to their previous historical doc series 'Mobs Mhericeá', and 'Clontarf', a 2 x one hour series for TG4 that will investigate the infamous historical Irish battle. more

BROADCAST | Rose of Tralee Attracts One Million+ Viewers
The Rose of Tralee on RTÉ One was the most-watched programme on any channel available in Ireland so far this year. A peak of over one million viewers saw London Rose Clare Kambamettu crowned the 52nd Rose of Tralee on Tuesday, August 26th. Hosted for the first time by a native Kerry-man in the shape of Dáithi O'Sé, the two day event was watched by an average of 916,300 people. more
INTERVIEW | Niall McKay Talks San Fran Irish Film Fest
Niall McKay founded the San Francisco Irish Film Festival in 2004. The festival, which takes place this year from the 23rd to the 25th of September, looks to present the best in contemporary Irish cinema, celebrating everything from features to documentaries to Irish language films. IFTN talked to the festival's founder and filmmaker about the running of the event and the changing face of Irish film. more
TRAINING | Michael Lavelle Shoots Berlinale Campus Short
Irish filmmaker Michael Lavelle wrapped production on his latest short film on Monday, August 23rd. The short (which is, as of yet, untitled) was chosen as one of only five projects for the final of the Berlin Today Award 2011; the Berlinale Talent Campus' short film competition. more
TRAINING | Wilson, O'Conor & Gallagher Enter Filmbase ShortSpace
Filmbase has announced it will host a new screening night, ShortSpace, on the first Thursday of every month. ShortSpace aims to be a new place for filmmakers and film fans to get together, screen and discuss short films and short filmmaking. more
REP BODIES | Barbara Galavan is New SPI Chief
The Board of Screen Producers Ireland has announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive, Barbara Galavan. Barbara replaces Sean Stokes who is leaving to head up Sports and Media Rights International Ltd a company providing advice and solutions for sports and media rights consumers. more
DISTRIBUTION | 'Pyjama Girls' Returns to IFI, Still Films in Spotlight
'Pyjama Girls', Maya Derrington's new feature documentary will return to the IFI for an exclusive release today, August 20th. The project looks to capture the ups and downs of working class teenage life behind the enigmatic and subversive statement of wearing pyjamas in public. Still Films' recent work will be further marked with the world premiere of Paul Rowley's experimental feature, 'The Rooms' and his documentary 'Seaview'. Finally Tuesday, August 24th will see a 'Still Films in Conversation' event take place where all three projects will be discussed. more

The first weekend in September will see the release of two new productions from Irish writer/director Shimmy Marcus (Headrush). September 3rd marks the long-awaited release of his Northern Soul feature 'Soul Boy' across screens in UK & Ireland, whilst new comedy series 'Mattie' starring Pat Shortt which Shimmy helmed debuts on RTÉ1 on September 5th. more
BROADCAST | NI Viewing Levels Up 5% in Ofcom Report
On 20 August, Ofcom published its seventh annual Communications Market report. In relation to Northern Ireland, the report says whilst average viewing levels have increased there by 5% since last year, NI audiences still watch less TV than the UK average. The report further found that UK channels contributed towards the first ever annual fall in the number of UK television channels. more
FESTIVALS | Darklight Festival Unveils Early Highlights
Dublin's Darklight Film Festival has announced the participants for the Heroes Edition Guest Programmers for the festival which takes place in October. Festival Director Nicky Gogan has also announced that Lance Weiler will return to the festival this year as Symposium Key Note speaker. Early bird tickets are currently available for the event and participants are being accepted for Tyrell's 'My Environment, My Film' workshop and competition event. more
