FINANCE | State Assets Review Group Target RTÉ & TG4
Colm McCarthy
Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has established a specific Group to examine state assets and liabilities and to advise him on how the assets can be better used or disposed of to support economic growth and national investment priorities. The Group, chaired by co-author of last year's so-called 'Bord Snip Nua' report, has already begun its task of examining selected public-sector assets, including commercial State companies such as RTÉ, ESB and TG4. more
FINANCE | £22m Return in NIS Financial Report
Your Highness
Northern Ireland Screen's annual report for the year 2009 - 2010 has been published and shows a return of £22 million to the local economy through the group's main production investment fund. One of the biggest success stories for the group was 'Your Highness' which brought in £11.78 million of this. more
REP BODIES | UK Film Council to be Abolished?

John Woodward, CEO of the UK Film Council has today announced that the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has informed him of its intention to abolish the UK Film Council. The decision comes in the wake of Britain's Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt proposing the closure of the group. more
TRAINING | Work Begins on National Film School Building
NFS
Work is to begin in two weeks on the site of IADT's new National Film School. The project, which has been awarded €5 million by Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan TD, will see the building of Ireland's first HD television studios. The building is to open for Sep/Oct 2011. more

BROADCAST | Cathal Goan Steps down as DG of RTÉ
Following its meeting on Thursday, July 22nd the Board of RTÉ announced that it will shortly begin the process to appoint a new Director-General of RTÉ having accepted the decision of the Director-General, Cathal Goan, to step down from his position having served his full seven-year term. more
PRODUCTION | Rebecca O'Brien Talks Co-Production
As part of this year's Galway Film Fleadh Media Antenna's Irish contingent, fronted by Eibhlín Ní Mhunghaile, hosted a co-producers' dinner. Rebecca O'Brien (who has produced twelve of Ken Loach's films since 'Hidden Agenda' in 1990) was invited to make a key note speech after dinner. more
AWARDS | 'One Hundred Mornings' Scoops Distribution Award
Conor Horgan's 'One Hundred Mornings' has won the inaugural WorkBook Project Discovery and Distribution Award which seeks to highlight an outstanding film that they feel has been overlooked in terms of US distribution. more
BROADCAST | Green Inc to Co-Produce 'The One Show' Shorts
Belfast-based Green Inc and London indie CTVC have announced their first joint commission, namely nine short films for BBC1's 'The One Show'. The films will mark the first fruit of the indies' formal joint venture, established last autumn. The companies will co-produce the films out of Northern Ireland but they will be filmed across the UK. Green Inc's other new project 'Glorious Gardens' will start broadcasting next Monday. more
FESTIVALS | 'Free your Film' With Darklight
Sony Ericsson has collaborated with the Darklight Festival to find three aspiring film makers in Ireland, and help them make a short film each. The competition finalists will receive a €3,000 budget, a Sony Ericsson Vivaz HD video/camera phone and production support to make their short film. The finished shorts will be premiered on the opening night of the Darklight Festival, 28 October 2010. more
FESTIVALS | Kerry FF Showcases Irish Shorts in Soho
The Kerry Film Festival (KFF), which this year celebrates its 11th anniversary, has partnered with the upcoming Rushes Soho Short Film Festival in an effort to promote Irish short films. This partnership is to be the first of many international partnerships the KFF is looking to set up as a means of promoting Irish shorts. more
FESTIVALS | GAZE Film Festival Comes of Age
The Dublin Lesbian and Gay International Film Festival will this year celebrate its 18th anniversary. The festival runs from Thursday, July 29th to Monday, August 2nd in the Light House Cinema, Dublin. This year's GAZE will see features, documentaries and shorts from countries such as Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Switzerland, China, Sweden, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand, UK and USA. more
TRANSPORT | Expert Air Awarded FACT Security Accreditation
Expert Air has announced that it has been awarded the FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft) Certificate of Accreditation. The transport solutions company is now the only Irish-owned company to have received this accreditation which will enhance the level of service the company can provide to the film and media industry, helping them address customers' security concerns against anti-piracy. more
MUSIC | Eanán Patterson Scores with 'Milo'
Irish composer Eanán Patterson will travel to Los Angeles later this year to create and record the score for TCS Productions' new feature film, 'Milo'. The film will start shooting in late autumn in L.A. when Patterson will travel over. The composer is currently scoring an untitled feature doc about T.K. Whitaker for TG4. more
