Ahead of this weekend's Academy Awards in Los Angeles, 'The Hurt Locker' director and producer, Kathryn Bigelow, has sent her thanks to the Irish Film & Television Academy following her receipt of the Best International Film prize at this year's IFTAs. International Actor winner Robert Downey Jr. also recently thanked the Irish Academy for his award. more |

'His & Hers' Takes Audience Prize at JDIFF |
Ken Wardop's documentary His & Hers came away with the Audience Award at the 2010 Jameson Dublin International Film Festival, which ended on Sunday 28th February. The film also won best documentary and cinematographer Kate McCullough was awarded the festival's inaugural Michael Dwyer Discovery honour. more |

Arts Council Reduces Funding Across the Board |
In the month of February the Arts Council announced over 350 funding decisions for 2010, an investment totaling just over €49 million. Within this figure all areas of the arts including literature, dance, theatre and music see a decrease in funding from last year's allowances. The funding in the area of film decreased from EUR2,395,400 in 2009 to EUR2,018,200 for 2010.more |

Ballyfermot College of Further Education will be represented by four of its graduates at the 82nd Academy Awards, held in Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on Sunday, March 7th. The annual awards ceremony sees nominations for the animation skills of former Ballyfermot College graduates Tomm Moore for 'The Secret of Kells'; Darragh O'Connell and Nicky Phelan for their short 'Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty' and Richard Baneham for 'Avatar'. more |

FAS Screen Training Ireland has teamed up with The Magic Light Producer Placement Programme in the UK to guarantee one place for a producer whose work benefits the Republic of Ireland's film industry. The five month course, for which applications are currently being sought, is intended to provide up-and-coming film producers with insight into the working operations and business realities of the film market. more |

Channel 4 Orders Network Ireland Television Shorts |
Channel 4 U.K. has inked a deal with Network Ireland Television (NITV) for the acquisition of 33 short films from the Irish distributor's library of 850 titles. The film package represents independent productions from British, Scottish, Irish and American directors, as well as films funded by the Irish Film Board, Scottish Screen and various U.K. regional funding agencies. more |

'Six Semesters' Enjoys Stateside Screenings |
'Six Semesters' one of Ireland's first feature length student films, has been selected to screen in three festivals in the United States over the coming months. This follows screenings at the Galway Film Fleadh, the CCIIFF in France and the Clones Film Festival. The film, which was entirely produced by Dublin City University students in 2007-2008, is a romantic comedy about a student who breaks up couples for a living. more |
