The latest film from celebrated Northern Irish documentarian Mark Cousins (The First Movie; The Eyes of Orson Welles) releases in Irish & UK cinemas today, Friday 17th September.
The reflective documentary follows Cousins himself as he prepares for surgery to restore his vision. In his journey, Cousins explores the role that visual experience plays in our individual and collective lives in what is described by Variety as “an uplifting mediation on the power of looking” and “A rich cinematic journey into the art of seeing and how it connects us with culture ourselves and each other” by Time Out.
Cousins focuses on sight and looking making human experience unique, particularly in an era where eyes are beset on all sides from the virtual imagery. The documentary also examines other people’s visions from lockdown as they encounter the Covid-19 pandemic and its perspective it has brought the world
The Story of Looking is directed by Mark Cousins from production company Modern Films (Wildfire; Shooting the Mafia). Producers are Mary Bell & Adam Dawtrey, with Timo Langer as editor. The feature documentary is adapted from the book of the same name authored by Cousins in 2017.
