Derry City is 117km from Belfast, 237km from Dublin, 397 from Rosslare Harbour and 428km from Cork. The city can be reached along the N2 and A5 out of Dublin and the A6 from Belfast. N.I. Railways and Ulsterbus provide daily services from Belfast to county Derry serving Coleraine, Portrush, Castlerock and Derry City.

Derry is situated along the northern coastline of Ireland. Derry City is located at the mouth of the River Foyle. The popular resort town of Portstewart is situated in the north of the county.

Rail
N.I. Railways provide daily services from Belfast to county Derry serving Coleraine, Portrush, Castlerock and Derry City. There are also connections from the county to the services to Dublin. N.I. Railways 01232 899411

Sea
The Sea Cat provides the fastest crossing to Northern Ireland from Stranrear in Scotland to Belfast, sailing 5 times a day and taking 90 minutes. A Liverpool to Belfast service runs every second day with Norse Irish Ferries. Stena Sealink and P&O Ferries operate ferries to Larne from Stranrear and Cairnryan, taking up to 140 minutes and sailing 10 to 15 times daily.

Mountsandel
Located just outside Coleraine this 200ft mound is the site where wooden houses dating back to 7000BC were uncovered.


Roe Valley Park
This park contains several old water-mills and the first hydro-electric domestic power station in Ulster opened in 1896.

 COASTAL

Lough Neagh
Situated between the counties of Derry, Tyrone, Antrim and Armagh, Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles covering 400 sq km. Myth has it that the lake was formed when Fionn Mac Cumhaill picked up a sod of earth and threw it into the Irish Sea, forming the Isle of Man. In southern Derry the lough and the Lower Bann River offer some fantastic trout-fishing opportunities.

Benone Strand
This is the location of Irelands longest beach at 6 miles. It is a beautiful spot rising to Magilligan Point.

Lough Beg
Set in this lake is Church Island Peninsula with its Christian relics and the ruins of a medieval church.

Lough Foyle
The ares offers good birdwatching.

Beaches
The best beaches in Derry are found at Portstewart and Castlerock.

 HISTORICAL

St. Columb’s Cathedral, Derry.
Built in 1633 this Gothic cathedral is noted for its stained glass. The interior was rebuilt in the 19th century and contains a striking wooden ceiling


St. Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry.
A Gothic cathedral designed by JJ McCarthy, St Eugene’s has a distinctive spire rising to 256ft.


Guildhall, Derry.
This 19th century Neo-Gothic building has been rebuilt five times and is now a venue for concerts and plays.


Mussenden Temple
This 18th century rotunda temple is located at Downhill in the grounds of a demesne planted by the Bishop of Derry, Frederick Hervey. The temple is based on the design of the Temple of Vesta outside Rome.


Hezlett House
Dating from 1690, Hezlett House is a fine example of a “thatched” cottage and is a National Trust property.


Portstewart Castle
This Gothic Castle is situated dramatically on a cliff-top and is now a convent school.


Dungiven Priory
The ruins of this Augustinian priory date back to 1100 and contain the best medieval tomb in the North.


Springhill House
This elegant manor is situated in Moneymore.

 INTERIORS

Derry City
With the onset of the peace process Derry city has begun its rebirth. Located, beautifully, on the banks of the Foyle River, the city boasts views of the Sperrin Mountains and the Donegal hills. Its position made it a target for attack, and so the Walls of Derry were built beginning in 1613, a mile in length. They are some of the finest preserved fortifications in Europe.


Portstewart
This resort town has a two-mile beach held up by dunes. The town is Victorian in style and there is a beautiful cliffside walk. The strand is a popular surfing spot.


Coleraine
This big shopping town, located on the River Bann, is also the location of a University of Ulster campus.


Limavady
Located in the centre of the beautiful Roe Valley, Limavady is a small town in the Georgian style.


Bellaghy
The town is famous as the birthplace of the Nobel Prize winning poet, Seamus Heaney. Bellaghy us a small town, near Lough Beg.
