TRAVEL INFORMATION

Waterford City is 156 km from Dublin, 126km from Cork, 153km from Shannon and 333km from Belfast.Both Bus Eireann and Iarnrod Eireann provide regular services to Waterford. The County also has its own Airport which operates flights to and from Britain. Waterford is a convenient location for access to Rosslare Harbour. Take the N7 out of Dublin branching onto the N9 to reach Waterford.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Waterford is located in Irelands “sunny southeast” which has a reputation for being the warmest and driest area of the country. Waterford City lies in a valley drained by the river Suir, which flows into the river Nore, which in turn flows into the river Barrow. Waterford has a population of over 91,000. It has a land area of 709 sq. miles or 1835 sq. km.

Bus
Bus Eireann provide services to County Waterford from Dublin, Limerick and Cork.

Rail
The Dublin / Waterford line serves Waterford Plunkett Station. Carrick-on-Suir is served by the Limerick / Waterford line.

Sea
Ireland is linked to Britain and Europe by a number of car-ferry routes. The main ports of entry are Cork, Dublin and Rosslare.

Airports

County Waterford has its own Airport which operates flights to and from Britain. It has one scheduled flight on weekdays, with two on a Saturday. From July, for a period of about six weeks, the airport will facilitate a scheduled daily service between Waterford and Luton operated by Suckling Airways. Waterford Airport is not capable of handling commercial jets, although small private jets have been using the airport at a rate of about one per day. 051 875589

Landscape
Waterford ’s landscape offers a variety of scale and colour.


Mountains
Knockmealdown Mountains
Cappoquin is situated at the foot of these mountains.
MahonFalls in the Comeragh Mountains.


Forests
Cappoquin forest park is located beside the Glenshelane River. The Colligan River Wood is located near Dungarvan


Mount Congreve Gardens , Kilmeaden
Large plantman’s gardens within woodlands. The walled garden contains a Georgian greenhouse.

 COASTAL

Coastline
The Waterford coastline offers low cliffs giving views over large bays. The coastline has some excellent walks and sandy beaches.

Hook Peninsula
This headland is dotted with ruins and quiet villages. The oldest lighthouse is on Hook Head

Waterford Harbour
Waterford City is situated on the south bank of the River Suir, which opens into the estuary of Waterford Harbour some miles to the east.

River Suir
The north and east of the county is bordered by the River Suir.

Blackwater
The west of the county is bordered by the Blackwater Valley. The River Blackwater rises in County Kerry and flows eastwards through Cork and Waterford and it turns southwards at Cappoquin to flow into Youghal Bay by a narrow estuary 15 miles long. The most beautiful part of the river is in County Waterford.

Beaches
There are bathing beaches at Dunmore East, Annestown, Bunmahon, Ardmore, Dungarvan and Tramore. Other beaches are at Guillameen and Newtown Cove.

 HISTORICAL

Field Monuments
Monuments such as Dolmens, Ogham Stones, Standing Stones, Mottes - are located throughout the county.


Castles
Dungarvan Castle, King John’s Norman Castle; Dunhill Castle, the chief seat of the Baron of Dunhill; Knockmaun Castle, situated on a huge limestone hill near Dungarvan, Ballysaggartmore Towers in Lismore; Lismore Castle, which overlooks the River Blackwater; and Strancally Castle, built in the 1820s, is located 10 km south of Cappoquin.


Ardmore Cathedral and Round Tower
The Munster Bishop, St. Declan founded the earliest monastery here, it is believed before the arrival of St. Patrick in 432 AD.


Carthage Cathedral, Lismore
A double monastery is located here, which was founded by St. Carthage in the seventh century. Richard II visited here in 1171 and stayed for two days. The present Carthage cathedral dates from 1633.


Molona Abbey
Molona Abbey is located near Youghal, and lies on the site of an island monastery which dates from the 6th century.


Mount Melleray Abbey
Founded by the Cistercians in 1831, when they were expelled from Melleray in Brittany. The abbey is located three miles north of Cappoquin.


Stradbally Medieval Church
The remains of a medieval nave and chancel church are to be found in the village of Stradbally.


Reginald’s Tower Museum, The Quay, Waterford.
The tower dates from the 12th century, and is the oldest urban civic building in the country. Strongbow met Aoife, the daughter of Dermot McMurrough, King of Leinster here.

Curraghmore, Portlaw
Curraghmore has been the magnificent home of the Marquis of Waterford and his ancestors since 1170. The interior of the house contains fine plasterwork. The grounds include an outstanding Arboretum and shell grotto which were built and personally decorated by Catherine Poer, Countess of Tyrone in 1754 and a bridge built in 1205 for King John to cross the River Clogagh.


Lismore Heritage Centre, The Courthouse, Lismore.
This former courthouse has now become the Lismore Heritage Centre where Lismore’s Celtic Origins are on view in the historical display room. The story of Lismore dates from 636 AD.


Waterford Heritage Museum, Greyfriars, Waterford
Located close to Reginald’s Tower, the museum holds artifacts from the Viking and Medieval periods. Also there are collections of decorated royal charters and civic regalia.

 URBAN

Waterford
The oldest city in Ireland, Waterford is dominated by the impressive Reginald's Tower which stands on the Quays. The city flourished as an important European port in the 16th and 17th centuries. Waterford is famous for its crystal, first produced in 1783.


Cappoquin
Cappoquin town is situated on a bend where the Blackwater turns sharply south, at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountains. This market town offers the angler what is probably the best game and coarse fishing in the country.


Dungarvan
This is a harbour town on the N25 and located on the River Colligan. Beside the river is the ruin of St. John’s castle of 1185. The area has some pleasant beaches and fishing is popular along the Collingan.


Dunmore East
A town famous for its deep sea angling. It has red sandstone cliffs and bustling harbour.


Lismore
A designated Bord Failte ' Heritage Town', Lismore is built on the River Blackwater, and is situated a couple of miles from the Knockmealdown Mountains.


Stradbally
The ruins of a mediaeval nave and chancel church can be found at Stradbally.


Tramore
Tramore is a popular seaside resort town, with a golf course, racecourse and 50-acre amusement park. Waterford Airport is located outside the town.
