GENERAL INFORMATION |
Monaghan is known as 'drumlin country' with its vast collection of small hills created in the Ice Age. The county is located at the border with Northern Ireland and retains strong links with Ulster. Its most famous exponent is the poet Patrick Kavanagh, who wrote stirringly about its bleak landscape. |

Countryside
Monaghan’s landscape is one of drumlins and hedgegrows.
Lough Muckno Leisure Park
Situated near Castleblaney, this former English estate is now a forest park, with good fishing and camping facilities.
Lough Fean House, Carrickmacross
Lougn Fean House estate has some beautiful woods and a lake.
Dun a Ri Forest Park
This park has some nice wooded walks in a pleasant setting.
Rossmore Forest Park
Rossmore park includes a golf course and Rossmore Castle. It is located close to Monaghan Town.
COASTAL
Lakes
As opposed to Cavan, its neighbour, Monaghan has very few lakes, Lough Muckno being the largest.
Canals
The Ulster Canal flows through the county and Monaghan Town itself.
HISTORICAL
St. McCartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan Town.
This French Revival Gothic Cathedral is a beautiful limestone building with a splendid, spacious interior.
Tiragarvan
The area around Tiragarvan contains some fine limestone caves.
Inishkeen Monastery
Inishkeen is the site of a 6th century monastery founded by St. Deagh.
Megalithic Sites
Some interesting sites can be found at Tiravera and Shantonagh
Rossmore Memorial Fountain
This ornate drinking fountain is to be found in Monaghan Town.

URBAN
Monaghan
Monaghan is known for its fine architecture, especially its Victorian buildings and its linen industry. Traces of a 1462 friary exist and the needle spired English Gothic Church dates from 1936. The town hosts the County Museum and an interesting heritage centre.
Carrickmacross
This town has fine Georgian houses, a wide main street and traditional shopfronts. It is Monaghan’s second town famous for its lace-making.
Clones
Clones is a busy market town situated at the top of a hill. Its main historical buildings are St. Tiernach’s Church and the ruins of the 12th century Augustinian Abbey. A carved high cross with depictions from the Bible endures in the Diamond.
Inishkeen
Noted as the birthplace of Patrick Kavanagh, this village has a folk museum and ruins of an abbey and tower. Inishkeen is also the site of a 6th century monastery founded by St.Deagh. A mile from the town is Channon Rock, formerly a Pale boundary mark. |
