GENERAL INFORMATION
Kilkenny is one of the most attractive towns in Ireland, and Kilkenny county is famous for its ruined abbeys, churches and castles. The county has a population of over 73,000, and covers a land area of 796 square miles or 2060 square kilometres. Kilkenny is famous for its passionate support of the game of hurling, with the county team having won the annual All Ireland Hurling Championships over twenty times this century.

Inistogue
Woodstock Estate Forest Park has extensive parkland gardens, mostly 19th century, overlooked by the ruins of Woodstock House.


Jerkinstown Park
This forest and deer park offers developed walking trails.


Dunmore Caves
A limestone cavern noted for the curious rock formations, in its chambers. Located at Castlecomer Road, Kilkenny.

Jerpoint Abbey, Thomastown.
This is an outstanding example of a Cistercian monastery with a beautifully sculptured arcade.


Clara Castle,
Located outside Kilkenny City.


Collegiate Church
Gowran, Co. Kilkenny.


Duiske Abbey
This is an example from the early Cistersian period. It has now been restored.


Granagh Castle,
Overlooking the River Suir on the Waterford / Kilkenny border.


Kells Priory
Mediaeval town walls with seven intact towers


Round Towers
Other round towers can be found in Fertagh near Johnstown, Knocktopher, and Bennettsbridge.


Various Field Monuments
Examples - including Motte Stone, Stone Circles, Dolmen, PassageTomb and Ring Forts - are located throughout the county.

St. Mary's Church

Located on the Main Street of Callan, this has been a parish Church since 1250.


Ballylarkin Abbey
Built in 1350, and located in the town of Freshford.


Freshford Church
This chapel is notable for its ornate 12th century Romanesque doorways.


Kilkenny Castle,
Dating from the late 12th century and set in extensive parklands, this castle is located at the south-eastern end of the city and built on high ground beside the river.


Black Abbey
Located in Kilkenny City, this Abbey dates from 1225.


Fertagh Round Tower
Situated outside Kilkenny city.


Stoneyford Roman Burial Sitev
Located at Stoneyford, near to the town of Kells.


Burnchurch Castle
Located outside the town of Callan, nearby to Kells Priory.


Tullaherin Round Tower
Located off the N9 Road between Thomastown and Gowran.


Talbot's Castle and City Hall
This is a massive circular mediaeval tower which stands at the centre of the courtyard of the city technical school.


The Thostel, Kilkenny City.
This interesting building is located on the High Street, and was built in 1761. The design is of Italian origin and consists of a double arcade, five arches in length with a steeply pitched roof and lantern clock tower.

 INTERIORS

Rothe House
Located in Kilkenny city, this is a large Tudor merchant’s house, built around two courtyards. Inside are archaeological artifacts and a costume collection.

 URBAN

Kilkenny
Long renowned as Ireland's Medieval Capital, this city's origins date back more than 1,500 years. Kilkenny is built on the banks of the River Nore, and its layout has changed little since Tudor times. Narrow winding streets and old buildings add an old-world aspect to the modern city. Kilkenny Castle, dating from the late 12th century, is located at the south-eastern end of the city and built on high ground beside the river. Other notable Norman sights in Kilkenny include St. Canice's Cathedral, Black Abbey, The Black Freren Gate, Rothe House, St. Francis's Abbey, St. John's Priory, and St. Mary's Parish Church.


Callan
About 12 miles to the south-west of Kilkenny City lies the town of Callan. Some notable sights in this town include the Augustinian Friary which overlooks The King's River, and St. Mary's Church on the Main Street which has been a parish Church since 1250.


Inistioge
This village has been used as a location for the films "Circle of Friends" and "Widow's Peak".


Freshford
Built on a tributary of the River Nore in the north-west of the county, notable sites in the area include Ballylarkin Abbey built in 1350, and Freshford Church with its ornate 12th century Romanesque doorways.


Kells
A mediaeval walled town straddling the King's River, with numerous picturesque old mills in the area.


Thomastown
A picturesque town in the south-east of the county, this town is home to Jerpoint Abbey - a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century. The scenic location of Kilfane Glen and Waterfall is situated north of Thomastown.
