Dingle is one of the most beautiful and visited places in Ireland. But hidden within the breathtaking beauty of the rugged landscape lies an even more breathtaking story, a story of isolation, despair, depression and exclusion.
In 2003, a survey was carried out in the Dingle Peninsula area of West Kerry. They discovered that there was an unusually large population of men living on their own in isolated conditions on the Peninsula and that there was a higher than average instance of depression and suicide among them. All of them shared feelings of insecurity, loneliness and isolation. But their story is not a unique one; in every parish in Ireland, there are people living alone whom modern-day Ireland has forgotten.
Léargas tells the story of some of the men behind the Dingle survey and talks to those who share the responsibility of finding solutions to the vast array of problems.
Léargas is RTÉ's weekly Irish-language documentary series. The series is now in its 8th season. Throughout its lifetime, the programme has been consistent in its mission to tell the stories that might not otherwise make it to the small screen."
