About the Role:

The Assistant Producer plays a key role in the Virgin Media Newsroom. The AP should be an experienced journalist that will provide support to the News Editor, News Producers, Correspondents, and reporters to help create and air bulletins across the day on Virgin Media Television. The AP should be a skilled communicator that can adapt quickly to changes in a busy national newsroom. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of broadcast news production, the post holder will also be expected to generate and edit their own stories. 

Specific Duties & Tasks:

  • Support the programme editor to deliver first class news stories to air
  • Work with reporters to ensure all stories are delivered to deadline
  • Act as liaison with the Graphics department to produce powerful images for studio walls to enhance each production
  • Support the digital team and assist with output where required
  • Produce national and international news stories and packages to a high standard
  • Work with the graphics department to produce top quality visuals and captions
  • Engage fully with the news agenda of the day
  • Produce maps and data visuals for breaking news stories
  • Support the news desk in sourcing interviewees and stories
  • Contribute to the creative process of story-telling for daily bulletins
  • You will be expected to perform duties as necessitated by your changing role and the overall business objectives of the Company, as directed. 

The Person:

  • At least three years’ experience in broadcast journalism
  • Strong broadcast production skills and high production values
  • Understand the value of using data graphics in news
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A great news sense and eye for a story
  • Excellent story-telling skills, with a strong emphasis on creativity
  • An authoritative voice for delivering news stories
  • Great attention to detail
  • Knowledge of legal issues relating to television journalism
  • A thorough knowledge of Irish and international news and current affairs
  • The ability to self-edit on modern television news production systems
  • Enthusiasm and energy for broadcast news
  • An interest and understanding of publishing to social media platforms
  • A robust work ethic that recognises the need for flexibility
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills
  • A good contacts book
  • Experience in a national newsroom
  • A third level or professional qualification in journalism or equivalent professional experience
