Following her final broadcast with Open House this week, RTE have announce that she will join Nationwide as a new co-presenter.
Nationwide is a long running news magazine programme transmitted on RTÉ three times a week; Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It has a good ratings with an average of over 1 million viewers a week. A "special" on Joe Dolan broadcast on March 31st drew
over 400,000 viewers and a 33% share of the television
audience. Other recent programmes to draw big audiences
include a programme on the 40th anniversary of
President Kennedy's visit to Ireland and one on John
Condon, the young Waterford boy who was the youngest
soldier to die in the First World War.
Having spent the last six years working on Open House with Marty Whelan this move follows the shock cancellation of Open House last month. Mary says of the move, "I am thrilled
to be joining Nationwide and will enjoy meeting people
the length and breadth of the country. There is a
wealth of culture, talent, energy and community spirit
to be celebrated. Nationwide has many successful years
behind it and having been a regular viewer I am looking
forward to making my contribution. It's a great
challenge and a great opportunity."
Mary will join current presenter Michael Ryan, who is also editor of the show, in the Autumn of 2004.
Open House will broadcast its final show on Thursday 8th of April 2004.
