Cillian Murphy has received the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in Leading Role, for his lead role in Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) has received the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in Leading Role, for his lead role in Oppenheimer. This follows Murphy’s first BAFTA Award win the week previous to the SAG Awards ceremony. The cast of Oppenheimer also took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, and Robert Downey Jr. received Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Lewis Strauss opposite Murphy.
The SAG Awards ceremony was held at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles, and follows the longest strike in SAG-AFTRA history. Over the past 29 years, 87 of the 116 Academy Awards winners in the four acting categories had first received SAG Awards. This success rate of 75% is why the SAG Awards are considered an important indicator of the results of the upcoming Academy Awards.
"Twenty-eight years ago when I was trying to become an actor, I was a failed musician and I felt extremely like an interloper, but now looking out at you guys here today, I know I am part of something truly wonderful, so thank you," said Murphy, speaking on his SAG Award win.
Murphy is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, and the Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 10th.
