The BBC has bought the IFTA-Winning Irish crime drama Kin from distributor Fifth Season.

Kin, produced by Bron Studios and Headline Pictures, in association with RTÉ, has been bought by the BBC. This follows news earlier this year of Bron filing for bankruptcy, citing the Covid-19 pandemic and dual U.S. labour strikes.

Written, created, and executive produced by Peter McKenna (The Last Kingdom, Red Rock), Kin follows the Kinsellas, a local crime family in Dublin in a gang war with global organisation, the Cunningham cartel. The cast features Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Clare Dunne (Herself), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones), Sam Keeley (Joe vs Carole), Emmett J. Scanlan (Peaky Blinders), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Outlander), and Yasmin Seky.

“Anchored by a tremendous cast, Kin is a powerful and intense story of love, grief, family and crime, and its devastating ramifications,” said Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition at the BBC.

According to Fifth Season, the second season’s finale was the most-watched episode of an Irish TV series this year. The second season accumulated over 1 million streams on RTÉ Player, and the series as a whole has garnered over 4 million streams on the platform as a whole.

From Bron, David Davoli (The Defeated), Samantha Thomas (Jessica Jones, Daredevil), Steven Thibault (Pieces of a Woman, Capone) and Aaron L. Gilbert (Bombshell, Joker, Fences) serve as executive producers. Executive producers for Headline Pictures are Christian Baute (Man in the High Castle, Funny Games), Laurence Lenica, Frank Calderon, and Ciaran Donnelly(Altered Carbon, Vikings). Donnelly is also a co-creator of the series.

Kin has previously streamed in the UK via the AMC streaming service, Sundance Now. AMC also handles US distribution of the series.
