Screen Skills Ireland is seeking participants for two of its upcoming courses, which are being tutored by Production accountant Neil Cairns in June & July.
Neil has been a freelance Production Accountant for the last 22 years, based in Scotland and working throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Australia. Recent films include T2 Trainspotting, Outlaw King, The Wife and The Inbetweeners.
Global Vista Training
Global Vista is one of the main film production accounting and cost reporting programmes, used by independent productions and US studios.
This course will teach participants how to import budgets into GV, export reports in pdf and excel, paste information into GV using excel.
Participants will practice inputting petty cash, purchase orders, invoices, payroll and journals. They will also set up bank accounts, currencies and TB and cost accounts. A 2 day intensely practical course.
Participant Profile:
This course, run in collaboration with Troy Studios, is ideally suited for Production Accountants, those already working in a finance / accountancy role and who are keen to move into the film and television sector or for those in more junior roles within Film & TV Production Accounts departments looking to gain experience working with Global Vista.

Production Accountancy
Production Accountants calculate finances, work out the cost of a production, communicate with financiers and control the cash flow and spending for the film.
Participants will work with EP Movie Magic Budgeting, the film industry’s standard budgeting tool, and Global Vista, one of the widely used accounting and cost reporting programmes. We will run through the accountant’s role in the whole filmmaking process, starting in preproduction, inputting departmental budgets’, creating the initial overall film budget and cashflow. We will look at the legal documentation, the role of the accountant in closing finance, finance plans, completion guarantee, locking the budget, then during shoot weeks doing cost reports and running a variance budget, using of the contingency, then post production. Discussion and practical use of Section 481. Various industry experts including HODs, producers and lawyers will come to talk on the course.
In pre-production, Production Accountants help the Producers and Production Managers to prepare budgets and Estimated Final Cost Reports.
During production, they oversee all payments, manage payroll, petty cash and foreign currency and keep accurate financial records. They help monitor budgets, analyse spending and provide weekly cost reports. They also produce cost forecasts to evaluate the impact of any production changes.

Participant Profile:
This hands-on programme, delivered in partnership with Screen Skillnet, aims to equip students with the skills required for a career as a film or television Production Accountant. It is ideally suited for those already working in a finance / accountancy role and who are keen to move into the film and television sector, or for those in more junior roles within Film & TV Production Accounts departments looking to move up. The course will run on Fridays from 13.00 to 20.00, Saturdays 09.00 to 18.00 and Sundays 09.00 to 16.00.
