Niamh Algar Named in ScreenDaily's Stars of Tomorrow 2018
04 Oct 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Irish actor Niamh Algar has been named as one of ScreenDaily’s ‘Stars of Tomorrow 2018’.

A regular participant of Bow Street’s academy of screen acting, Algar’s first major role came as ‘Olivia’ in Lorcan Finnegan’s horror film ‘Without Name’, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival in 2016. Following the success of the London screening, Algar was picked up by Independent Talent. The actress who is now based in London told ScreenDaily “I came over for the festival and didn’t leave.”

Algar has enjoyed a successful 18 months since picking up her first IFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Nick Kelly’s feel-good Irish feature film ‘The Drummer and the Keeper’, which co-stared Peter Coonan, Jacob McCarty and Dermot Murphy. The Irish actress also secured a leading role in Shane Meadow’s Channel 4 drama ‘The Virtues’, which shot in Sheffield last year.

More recently, Algar has been cast in Channel 4’s new series ‘The Bisexual’ starring Desiree Akhavan and Maxine Peake and will feature alongside Joe Cole (‘Peaky Blinders’) in ‘Pure’ later this year. Currently, the actress is working on the BBC political thriller ‘MotherFatherSon’ starring Helen McCrory, Richard Gere and Billy Howle, and will see Algar play a former soldier in Northern Ireland.

Algar will also return to the big screen alongside Barry Keoghan later this year in Nick Rowland’s dark family drama ‘Calm with Horses'. The film, which was shot on the west coast of Ireland earlier this year, is being produced by Film4 and Michael Fassbender’s DMC Films.
