‘All Is By My Side’, the Jimi Hendrix biopic currently filming in Ireland, will not feature any Hendrix songs in the film, it has been confirmed.
As previously reported by IFTN, the Irish co-production starring Outkast star Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000) as Hendrix has not received permission from the Hendrix estate to use any of the rock icon’s music in the biopic.
Instead producers will use covers Benjamin (Semi-Pro) has recorded of classic songs by artists including The Beatles, Muddy Waters and Chip Taylor. Benjamin recorded songs for the soundtrack in LA.
Andre confirmed the fact in a statement saying: "The storyline of ‘All Is By My Side’ focuses on the early days of Jimi's career, when his performances largely consisted of innovative interpretations of existing songs. These are the performances that got him discovered, blew everyone's minds and helped him become the icon he became.”
Hendrix's estate had previously said that “no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.”
‘All Is By My Side’, currently shooting in Dublin and Wicklow, is due to wrap principal photography next week and is directed and written by John Ridley (U-Turn).
Dublin-based Subotica Entertainment are co-producing the feature with America’s Darko Entertainment and Britain’s Matador Pictures. Darko is financing the project, while Content Film are handling sales outside of the US.
Tristan Orphen Lynch is producing for Subotica alongside Darko’s Sean McKittrick, Jeff Culotta and Danny Bramson. Nigel Thomas is producing for Matador. Ridley and Tedd Hamm will executive produce.
‘All Is By My Side’ also stars Hayley Atwell (Captain America), Jade Yourell (Fair City, Happy Ever Afters), Danny McColgan (13 Steps Down), Laurence Kinlan (Love/Hate, The Guard) and Imogen Poots (Jane Eyre).
Among the Irish crew working on the project are line producer Donna Eperon (Love Eternal, The Other Side of Sleep); assistant art director Nenazoma McNamee (Dark Touch); cinematographer Tim Fleming (Once, Citadel); hair stylist Lorraine Glynn Whelan (Breakfast On Pluto, Albert Nobbs); make-up artist Morna Ferguson (In America, The Guard); prop buyer Sarah Kingston (Byzantium, The Guard); Ele Wood (The Other Side of Sleep) and art department trainee Julia Davin-Power (Love Eternal).
Leonie Pendergast (Raw, What Richard Did) is on costume design, while Dan Birch (Camelot, Parked, The Tudors) is on on-location sound. Other crew on-board include English production designer Paul Cross (Spooks, Luther).
