Irish Wins for Graham Norton & Brendan O’Carroll at NTA’s
26 Jan 2017 : Laura Brennan
Both Graham Norton and ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ comedian Brendan O’Carroll took away awards at the 22nd National Television Awards hosted by Dermot O'Leary ‘The X Factor’ and Scarlett Moffatt ‘Gogglebox’ which took place at The O2 in London on Wednesday evening 25th January.

The 53-year-old BBC chat show host Graham Norton from Clondalkin was honoured with a special recognition award for his work within the TV industry.  ‘The Graham Norton Show’ which he has hosted since 2007, is celebrating its tenth anniversary year. The former ‘Father Ted’ actor seemed very grateful to receive the special recognition award which was awarded to comedian Billy Connolly in 2016 and David Tennant in 2015.

In a short video recorded after the event Graham who has previously won five Bafta’s reflected on the fact that he had forgotten to thank his mother in his acceptance speech. “I forgot to thank my mother. Mum thank you very much because I do eventually want to go home one day, so I must thank you,” he said.

‘Mrs Brown’s Boys’ beat off competition from ‘Orange Is The New Black’, ‘Benidorm’ and the ‘Big Bang Theory’ to take away the best comedy award for the much loved BBC series. On stage accepting the award Brendan O’Carroll said “It’s very, very exciting and very humbling. Thanks to the BBC and everyone involved.”

In a short video clip surrounded by some of the show’s cast and crew recorded after the event O’Carroll said “This award is our fourth but it was made probably the most important because it was presented by Ken Dodd. He’s one of my Hero’s so thank you Sir Ken.”

Other winners on the night included Mary Berry for best TV judge, best period drama went to ‘Call the Midwife’ which was nominated alongside Cillian Murphy’s ‘Peaky Blinders’, Aidan Turners ‘Poldark’, ‘Stanger Things’ and ‘Victoria’.

It was no surprise that Ant & Dec took away best TV presenter, an award they’ve now won for the 16th time in a row. ‘Casualty’ appeared to be a shock winner on the night winning best drama ahead of ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Night Manager’, ‘Happy Valley’ and ‘Cold Feet’.
