Denis Conway to star |
‘The Running Mate’, a new 4 x 1 hour comic drama series for TG4 will begin principal photography next month. The €2m project will be directed by IFTA winning director Declan Recks (Pure Mule) and stars Denis Conway (A Tigers Tail, Showbands), Don Wycherley (Bachelors Walk) and Eamon Hunt.
Speaking to IFTN earlier today, Rubicon Films’ producer Rebecca O’Flanagan confirmed the seven week shoot will begin on locations around Dingle from the 9th of October. Based upon an idea from acclaimed Irish writer Conor McPherson, the screenplays are written by Marcus Fleming and Nicky Murphy & Mark Cantan.
Set in a world of skulduggery, intrigue and friendship, ‘The Running Mate’ follows the battle to win the final seat in the North Kerry constituency elections. When Vincent Flynn’s (Conway) campaign for a Dail seat begins to crumble, he teams up with down-on-his-luck Willie Costello (Wycherley) to form Carrigeen’s most unlikely political machine.
Supporting cast features Carrie Crowley, Frank Kelly (Father Ted), IFTA winning actress Charlotte Bradley (Proof), Lesley Conroy (The Clinic) and a host of talented Irish newcomers including Linda Breathnach and Cillian O’Sullivan.
DOP is Ruairi O’Brien who will be shooting on High Def Sony 750 format. Costumes are by Louise Stanton, Production Design is by Caroline O’Connor and editor is Gareth Young (The Clinic, Pure Mule).
The Irish language drama series is scheduled to broadcast on TG4 during the spring 2007 schedule. The series is produced by Rebecca O’Flanagan (Right Now Ladies & Gents) through Rubicon Films, with Paddy McDonald (The Mighty Celt) and Robert Walpole (Man About Dog) as executive producers. Finance is provided by TG4, the BCI, the Irish Film Board and S481.
“We’re delighted to be nearing production on The Running Mate,” says producer O’Flanagan. “The series has been in development for over two years and we wouldn’t be where we are now without the ongoing support of TG4, the BCI and the Irish Film Board. With a great cast and crew already in place, we are very excited to be beginning to realise our ambitions for the project.”
