This one off, 52’ documentary enters the world of contraception in Ireland, via the Irish male, in the context of the vasectomy service, which is availed of by over 4,000 Irish men each year. The documentary follows a male character through the vasectomy procedure in the style of popular observational documentary with an active narration. Here, we get to know and engage with our vasectomy patient, as we find out why he has decided to take this route, what his domestic situation is, etc. At a secondary, but important, level we will also engage with our ‘peripheral characters’; the surgeons who carry out this procedure, Catholic Church representatives and those who have already had a vasectomy, as we get an understanding of how the procedure works and what our subjects has ahead of him. These ‘peripheral characters’, though their respective viewpoints, provide an understanding of the history of the vasectomy in Ireland as well as some humorous anecdotes from surgeries already performed.
