Daniel Day-Lewis returns to acting for role in son's feature directorial debut

Focus Features has confirmed that the three time Oscar winning actor has returned to star in Anemone, the feature directorial debut of his son Ronan Day-Lewis.

Anemone is co-written by Daniel Day-Lewis and Ronan Day-Lewis, and will mark Daniel’s first acting role since Focus Features’ Phantom Thread in 2017 for which he received an Oscar nomination.

Focus Features is partnering with Brad Pitt’s Plan B to produce the film that also stars Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green. Ben Fordesman (Love Lies Bleeding) is the Director of Photography, Jane Petrie (The Crown) is the Costume Designer, and Chris Oddy (Zone of Interest) is the Production Designer.

Anemone explores the intricate relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers, and the dynamics of familial bonds.

Speaking about the film, Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski said: “We could not be more excited to partner with a brilliant visual artist in Ronan Day-Lewis on his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as his creative collaborator. They have written a truly exceptional script, and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the team at Plan B.”

Ronan Day-Lewis is a painter and filmmaker, whose work has shown widely in the United States. His debut international solo exhibition opens on October 2nd in Hong Kong, with additional upcoming shows in New York City and Los Angeles.

Focus Features upcoming films includes Chloé Zhao’s next feature Hamnet starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley from producers Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes.

Other films on their slate include Piece By Piece, an animated biopic from Morgan Neville about the life of multifaceted global superstar Pharrell Williams told through the lens of LEGO bricks, Robert Eggers' reimagining of Nosferatu, Edward Berger's thriller Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes, Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming crime-thriller Black Bag starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, Yorgos Lanthimos’s next film Bugonia starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, and the highly anticipated third instalment of the Downton Abbey franchise.

Universal Pictures International will distribute the film internationally on behalf of Focus.
