Nightflyers Production Training Scheme Wraps with Industry Training Event
13 Jun 2018 : Nathan Griffin
It’s a wrap for the ‘Nightflyers’ Production Training Scheme, which was a collaboration between Troy Studios Limerick, Universal Cable Productions and Wild Atlantic Pictures.

The pilot production training scheme offered essential on-the-job training for section 481 trainees employed on the ‘Nightflyers’ production.  Screen Training Ireland engaged directly with the production, department heads, and crew to outline key training objectives for the trainees.

The programme provided work-based learning and mentoring for over 24 trainees in areas such as production, accounts, assistant directing, costume, continuity, hair and make-up, camera, model making, props, art department, set decoration, sound special effects and visual effects.  Each of the department heads engaged with the process guiding the trainees through the essential skills required to work in a busy production department.

To celebrate the end of the pilot training scheme, trainees will participate in an industry training event providing them with the opportunity to network with HOD’s from the production. The event  will open with a keynote address from producer Sean Ryerson and HOD’s from the ‘Nightflyers’ production including, Kris Wood, VFX Supervisor (on set), Conor Dennison, Art Director, John Neligan, Production Buyer, Jeroen Hendricks, Digital Imaging Technician, Edmund Sampson, Unit Production Manager, Niamh Gale, Production Coordinator, Ciara McArdle, Costume Supervisor, Rory McDermott, Production Accountant, Nicola Jackson, 3rd Assistant Director, David Moran, Script Supervisor and James McGuire, Gaffer.

‘Nightflyers’ is based on the novella by George R. R. Martin, who also serves as an executive producer on the project, and is produced by Universal Cable Productions and co-produced by Netflix. Jeff Buhler wrote the adaptation for television and is the showrunner and executive producer. Brian Nelson, Mike Cahill, and Andrew McCarthy serve as executive producers. Gene Klein, David Bartis and Doug Liman from Hypnotic; Alison Rosenzweig and Michael Gaeta of Gaeta Rosenzweig Films; and Lloyd Ivan Miller and Alice P. Neuhauser of Lloyd Ivan Miller Productions also serve as executive producers. The drama production is based at Troy Studios Limerick in association with Wild Atlantic Pictures.

Speaking about the programme, Executive Vice President of Universal Cable Production, Mark Binke said:

“We are always looking for opportunities to support local job creation and initiatives to train the next generation of professionals. Thank you to our partners in this endeavour.”

Eoin Egan, Producer added:

"Wild Atlantic Pictures were very proud to be involved in the NIGHTFLYERS Production Training scheme made possible by the support of Screen Training Ireland, IFB, Universal Cable Productions and Troy Studios. We are confident the initiative has had a significant impact on local job creation and helped establish Troy Studios and Limerick as a hub for the film and television industry."

Gareth Lee, Manager, Screen Training Ireland said:

“The NIGHTFLYERS Production Training Scheme, has proven to be a fantastic opportunity for up and coming talent to gain essential skills, knowledge and understanding on a cutting edge production. We learned a great deal from this pilot programme that we can use to shape any similar, work-based programmes we develop in the future.”
