#IFTNTraining: DKIT Film Courses in 2017

The Dundalk Institute of Technology established the Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music in 2015, which is now the creative hub of the institute, complete with TV and recording studios, performance venues and discipline specific lab spaces.

The department boasts a range of courses in film and television production and related areas.

Recognising the continued need for high-functioning generalists in the screen media industries, this degree was redeveloped (from the former BA in Video & Film Production) in 2014 to ensure it remained to the forefront of technology-driven trends within the film and television industries.

Lorcan Dunne, Assistant Lecturer on what makes DKIT unique for prospective students:
Based in the PJ Carrolls building on the DKIT campus and equipped with a full 4K TV Studio, a screening room, multiple edit suites, a video editing lab, multimedia labs, a radio studio, a dark room, a green screen studio & equipment borrowing office, students are trained on key software packages used in the film & TV industry, including Pro-Tools, Avid Media Composer, Premier Pro, After Effects, Photoshop amongst many more. Students in the 3rd and 4th year of the programme also have the opportunity to compete for the Annual John Moore Film Award. A Dundalk native, Director John Moore began his relationship with DKIT and the Section of Creative Media in 2011. Access to film and television industry professionals is a core feature of the programme & lecturers continually invite Industry Professionals to deliver masterclasses and guest lectures. A certain amount of course content in specialised areas is also delivered by industry professionals such as renowned film directors, cinematographers and producers.

How are students prepared for working in the industry?
This course is over 60 percent practical and industry focused. Lecturers have close ties to industry and identify new media trends such as virtual reality, streaming, interactive content etc.

Graduates of this programme are recognised as being uniquely situated to work in the film and television industries in Ireland and abroad and have found work in companies such as Big Mountain Productions, One Productions, Vision Independent Productions, Click Media, Egg Post-Production, Setanta Sports and Tailored Films.

BA (Hons) in Communications in Creative Media
– 4-year Level 8 - www.dkit.ie/cmedia
The aim of this programme is to produce Creative Media professionals with the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to work within the varied Creative Media Industries in Ireland and abroad. Part of the nature of these Industries is that they are dynamic and innovative; on practical and technical fronts there are continuing updates to terminologies and technologies. The programme merges practical experience in existing and emergent creative media and digital platforms with a user-centered and industry aware approach to design and this balance will offer students the opportunity to develop a combination of professional and creative skills and equips them for the rapidly changing industrial environment. By balancing content creation alongside teamwork and entrepreneurial skills, the BA (Hons) in Communications in Creative Media ideally equips students to pursue graduate level positions across divergent sectors in the creative media industry. The programme's unique selling point is that it is an undergraduate degree that will create graduates who are idea-driven content designers competent in communicating through a variety of mediums and who have had the space to test out media theories through practical work.

BA In Media Arts & Technologies

The aim of this programme is to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge, core skills and competencies to work in a variety of roles within the media arts & technology sectors, particularly in the areas of these sectors where the merging of creative practices and skills utilising media and information technologies are developed. In the multi-platform world of today, new evolving digital skills are being sought to produce high end content for simultaneous delivery on not only traditional print and broadcast media, but on the web, on mobile devices, and using the many existing and developing social media tools. The overall aim is to provide students with these core hard and soft skills. These skills are highly transferable between the various creative industries.

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communications in Creative Multimedia
- 1-year add-on Level 8 – www.dkit.ie/multimediahons
This course is designed to allow graduates of the former Level 7 Communications in Creative Multimedia (and other similar programmes elsewhere) the opportunity to progress to a related Level 8 BA within the Dundalk Institute of Technology. In addition, we welcome applications from Industry Professionals who may not have a prior Level 7 degree but can be assessed through our Recognition of Prior Learning policy for possible entry.

Masters by Research (Creative Media)
– 2-4 years - www.dkit.ie/programmes/masters-research-creative-media
We would like to hear from interested industry professionals and recent third-level graduates who wish to pursue a Masters or PhD by Research in the Creative Media area, which can include a practice-based and/or a traditional research project. In order to enrol, a prospective student would submit a proposal for a research topic with which they would wish to engage and they will have regular meetings with their supervisory team and agree key deadlines for deliverables.

BA in Theatre & Film Practice
This programme will provide a solid grounding in the practical application of both theatre and film production skills, a mix of which are currently unavailable to prospective students on the island of Ireland at this level, along with key acting skills and a theoretical foundation. The BA in Theatre and Film Practice will diversify the skills of potential performing arts students by allowing them to develop not only skills in voice, acting and movement, but also in film studies and film production & post-production. Uniquely, this programme will also allow students the opportunity to gain core skills in technical theatre practice, including set design and construction, sound and lighting design, costume design and stage management. They will also practice promotion, administration and management skills in their third year projects.
