American film distributor Magnolia Pictures has bought the US rights to coming-of-age Irish road trip comedy Joyride starring Oscar winning actress Olivia Colman and Irish youngster Charlie Reid.

According to Variety, Magnolia has scheduled a dual release in cinemas and on demand on December 23rd. Other films on Magnolia’s upcoming slate include action-thriller Hunt, directed by and starring Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae, and Paul Schrader’s crime thriller Master Gardener.

Directed by Emmy-winning documentary maker Emer Reynolds, Joyride was filmed on location in Kerry and released by Wildcard Distribution in Irish and UK cinemas last summer.

Fleeing from his father, 12-year-old Mully steals a taxi and is shocked to find a woman, Joy, in the back seat with a baby.  Joy is on her way to an important meeting, and Mully needs to get some distance from his dad, who’s after the cash Mully has with him. The unlikely pair go on a journey across Ireland, gradually finding the friendship, love, and learning, they never knew they needed in each other.

Joyride was developed by Embankment Films, written by Ailbhe Keogan and produced by Aoife O’Sullivan and Tristan Orpen Lynch through Ingenious Media, Subotica, and Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland. Executive producers are Christelle Conan, Peter Touche, Tim Haslam, Hugo Grumbar, and Ailbhe Keogan.

The film was developed with assistance from Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Kerry College Monvalley Campus, Screen Kerry, the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme & Kerry County Council, National Lottery through Creative Scotland Alongside Creative Scotland / National Lottery high impact. Developed in association with Advance Party Films Limited.

The deal for the North American territory was negotiated between Magnolia’s EVP Dori Begley & SVP of acquisitions John Von Thaden, and Embankment Films’ Mark Lane on behalf of the production team.
