Two Irish feature films will be released in the US this Friday, with Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers and David Freyne’s Dating Amber entering select American cinemas on November 13th.
Wolfwalkers, directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, is the Kilkenny animation studio’s highly anticipated third feature film in its Irish folklore trilogy. Since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, critics have already heralded the film as one of the most beautiful and powerful animated works of the year.
Dating Amber, starring Fionn O’Shea and Lola Petticrew, was previously released in the UK and Ireland on Amazon Prime and secured US distribution this summer. The LGBT coming-of-age comedy garnered a glowing reaction to its June SVOD release, despite its theatrical run cut short due to cinema closures.
As these two major films connect with international audiences, the future continues to look bright for Irish film, with genre projects lighting the way. A promising wealth of Irish horror, sci-fi, and comedy projects are engaging with international buyers in the American Film Market (AFM) this week, speaking to the strength of production activity in Ireland in recent years. In particular, the number of projects recently wrapping production or due to begin shooting highlights the industry’s resilience in returning to production this year under strict COVID-19 protocols.
Tailored Film’s Let The Wrong One In is now selling with MPI Media Group at the market, having just wrapped production in Ireland, as well as Andrew Legge’s sci-fi feature L.O.L.A., produced by Irish production company Cowtown Pictures. Bankside Films has worldwide rights to L.O.L.A. and will be sharing a promo with buyers at AFM this week.
Projects at earlier stages are also making headlines at the market. Subotica-produced comedy Joyride, which stars Olivia Colman, is due to start shooting in the West of Ireland in 2021. Woken, a science-fiction project from Irish director Alan Friel is also due to start principal photography next year, with Embankment Films announcing the acquisition of the film at the opening of AFM. Epic Pictures is to launch sales at AFM for The Cellar, Brendan Muldowney’s horror film from Savage Productions and Hail Mary Pictures, due to start shooting this month in Co. Roscommon.
Dating Amber is currently available to stream in the UK and Ireland on Amazon Prime, and Wolfwalkers will launch on Apple TV+ this December 11th.
Wolfwalkers and Dating Amber will be in select US cinemas this Friday, November 13th.
