Spotlight: 'The Comeback' - Filmbase's Final MA Feature Film
27 Mar 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Following on from the announcement that Filmbase would close its doors and move into voluntary liquidation after 32 years serving the Irish film industry, Filmbase’s final MA feature film is still continuing as planned.

The film, which is currently fund-raising in an effort to improve the limited budget on the Masters project, is also said to be in the final stages of casting for the feature.

The project is due to begin principle shooting on Monday, April 9th.

Speaking about the project last week, Producer, Treasa Ni Mhairtin told IFTN:

“We're devastated that a resource such as Film Base is gone however our Masters course is continuing through the help of Dublin Business School. With regards to the feature we're still fundraising, casting and looking for crew and are looking forward to starting filming on April 9th. Nothing has changed with regards to the ambitions we have for the quality of this production.”

‘The Comeback’ follows the story of Matt Malone, an aging 90s rock star who’s given a second shot at fame. A visit from his estranged daughter coincides with a video of a major recording studio meltdown going viral. Matt has to decide what’s more important - fame or family? Dublin features prominently in the story, as does music, from rock to rap and 90s nostalgia to bang up-to-date sounds. The film intends to follow in the footsteps of a number of famous music-based Irish films such as ‘The Commitments’ and ‘Sing Street’.

Speaking with IFTN ahead of principle shooting starting in April, Co-Director James O’Connor said:

“We’re really excited to be making this film. As well as being a great opportunity for a young director it’s also a great script with a lot of potential to make an amazing film.”

Elaine Gallagher, Co-Director said:

“‘The Comeback’ combines all of my interests in one – filmmaking, comedy and music, topped off with a generous dollop of 90s nostalgia! I am looking to create a memorable, feel-good movie that will proudly take its place beside other greats of the genre.”

Shane Conaty, Co-Director added:

“I want to showcase my experience I’ve gained from shooting shorts, doc’s and my own feature film before. I want to bring my commitment, passion and vision I have for film making to this project, one I am looking forward to it immensely.”

Filmbase has been behind some of Irelands great home grown talents in recent years, and has had great success with previous MA feature films such as ‘Monged’ (John Connors, Graham Early), ‘Poison Pen’ (Aoibhinn McGinnity, Lochlain O’Mearain), ‘How To Be Happy’ (Brian Gleeson, Gemma Leah Devereux), and the hope among this MA group is that ‘The Comeback’ can become a memorable final chapter, to an already impressive catalogue of Filmbase student projects.

With announcements in relation to cast and crew to come, the students behind the final Filmbase MA feature film, ‘The Comeback’ hope to send the course off in style with a memorable film that they hope will be supported by Ireland’s film community.
