Understanding Formats with Patrick Uden: Workshop & One-to-One Meetings
2017-03-30 9:00:00 :
Galway Film Centre are seeking participants for a workshop on Understanding Formats with BAFTA-winning formats guru, Patrick Uden, in association with the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).

It takes place in the Galway Education Centre, Wellpark Road on Wednesday April 26th.

This training offers insights and analysis into how television formats work and why formats are created. There will also be the opportunity to have a one to one meeting with Patrick to discuss your format ideas on April 27th.

This course is aimed at Producers, Directors, Assistant Producers, Edit Producers and Writers seeking to enhance their understanding of formats.

Topics include:

  • Analysis of top UK formats through selected clips.
  • A detailed account of how one successful US format was rebuilt for the UK market and became a huge hit, as well as reasons why other US formats did not translate.
  • Insights into how to develop creative teams based on examples from media other than TV.
  • A practical afternoon session where the class tries to build formats from scratch.
  • Basic production techniques for formats.

One to One with Patrick Uden
The following day, April 27th, Patrick is available to meet selected participants individually to discuss their ideas. Those interested should describe their proposal for a format on one short page or even one line. For example, the basic description for The Apprentice format is, ‘To survive you must work as a team. To win you must fight as an individual.’

How to Apply
To apply for the workshop, please e-mail work @ galwayfilmcentre.ie with a current, relevant, brief CV by 1pm Thursday April 13th.

If you are interested in a one to one meeting on April 27th, email your proposal on a PDF to Laura Poortenga at work @ galwayfilmcentre.ie by 1pm Thursday April 13th. Meetings will take place before 2pm.

Patrick Uden
After graduating from the Royal College of Art Film & TV School in 1969, Patrick quickly became a Senior Producer-Director in the BBC Science Department during which time he was nominated 3-times for a BAFTA. At Channel 4’s inception in 1982, he left the BBC to create one the UK’s first independent production companies: Uden Associates Ltd. After 21 pioneering years running this much-admired company, he simply closed it in 2004 (rather than sell it) so he could become free to do as he wished.

Shortly after this, he created his microindie: Uden-Media Ltd offering his services to broadcasters, indies and corporate clients on structure, team-building, commentary-writing etc, while exploring the emergent media of IOS app design through his other company Heuristic-Media Ltd. He won a BAFTA in 2006 for his innovative Channel Four documentary upload site called FourDocs and co-created the UK version of The Apprentice, Series II & III of The Restaurant and many other hit shows.
