A TV spinoff of Oscar nominated Irish film ‘Brooklyn’ is currently in development, Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey of Wildgaze Films have confirmed.
‘Brooklyn’, currently nominated for three Oscars (including Best Film) and six BAFTA Awards, tells the story of a young Irish immigrant (Saoirse Ronan) torn between two countries and two men. The film was directed by John Crowley and was adapted by Nick Hornby from the novel by Colm Tóibín. It was produced by Parallel Films in Ireland with partial funding from the Irish Film Board.
The TV version being developed will focus on the boarding house run by Julie Walter’s character Mrs Keogh in the film. It is expected that Walters will reprise her role for the film. Saoirse Ronan, Oscar nominated for her turn as Eilis in the film, is not expected to appear however.
Speaking to Screen International, Finola Dwyer said: “I suggested the idea to Colm (Tóibín) quite early on, before there was even a first draft for the film. We’re talking to writers now and have a couple in our sights.”
Dwyer went on to state that the project would not go into official development until the film completes its theatrical and home-entertainment run.
To date, ‘Brooklyn’ has grossed over $8m in the UK and Ireland and over $30m in the US.
The film will be released on Blu-ray, DVD and EST from February 26th in Ireland, courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Check out the trailer below:
