The 2014 VFX: Script to Screen programme, designed in association with Screen Training Ireland, the Irish Film Board and the VFX Association of Ireland, has kicked off its first module programme in Dublin today. The programme focuses on enabling experienced European filmmakers to fully understand visual effects and digital production, and provides them with the technical and creative skills to develop and manage ambitious VFX projects.
One of the highlights of this year’s programme is a live VFX shoot demonstration, conducted by Irish talent including Director Nick Ryan (The Summit), VFX Supervisor Ed Bruce (Ripper Street, Last Days on Mars, Game of Thrones) and Cinematographer Tim Fleming (Once, As if I Am Not There, Luther, The Musketeers). The shoot will practically illustrate how visual effects processes are managed on a film set, and will include live demonstrations of how stunts, special effects, digital effects, production design and computer generated (GC) imagery all interact to create the complex, seamless, and photorealistic images we see on our cinema screens.
Confirmed international speakers on this year’s programme include award-winning Production Designer Andy Nicholson (Gravity, Divergent); VFX Art Director Virginie Bourdin (X-Men, Harry Potter, Narnia); Fay McConkey, VFX Producer (Cold Mountain, Sahara); DoP/VFX Supervisor Tom Debenham (The Tree of Life, Under the Skin); VFX artist and Supervisor Michael Wortmann (Star Trek: Into the Darkness, X-Men: First Class); and Previs Supervisor Farad Hameed (Gravity, Batman: The Dark Knight and Christopher Nolan's upcoming Interstellar).
Speaking on the programme, Screen Training Ireland's Sorcha Loughnane said ”Digital production and visual effects are part of the new filmmaking landscape; we are delighted to be working with such a wealth of Irish and European VFX talent on the programme in order to explore and navigate its complexities.”
