St John’s Central College is situated in a state-of-the-art building in the heart of Cork city. The ultra-modern college is the first Further Education purpose built complex in the entire country.
It is designed for students and teachers alike to maximise the delivery of high quality training. The entire campus was the first wireless broadband educational complex in Ireland.
The Film and TV Department deliver a wide variety of modules from Directing, Camera/lighting, Screenplay writing Photography, Studio and Location Sound production to Producing, Editing, Documentary, Digital film production, and Art Direction over two years at level 5 and 6 to a large body of Film and TV students.
On a successful completion of level 6, students can progress to the final year film degree In Brighton Film school, final year Film production BA in Sunderland University, second year on specialist program post production in Southamptons' Solent university, Masters Editing program in Newport, Ma in Scriptwriting Southampton, besides native colleges such as the National Film School, IADT, and GMIT, LIT, UCC, etc. in Ireland. Students have often progressed directly into the industry as ACs, D.O.Ps, sound recorders, Producers, Film and TV directors also.
St. Johns has a large department with a vibrant staff body comprised of specialised trainers, who have come from and maintain links with the film and television industry.
The campus has a purpose built TV studio, broadcast multi-format cameras (analogue and digital), dedicated film cameras, sound studio and location sound kits including extensive lighting (HMI’s, Kino Flos, led lights) and the most up to date Apple Mac computers and software (e.g. Adobe Premiere and Rush, After affects, Final cutpro, logic pro, EP budgeting and scheduling, final draft and tagger).
The Film and TV course started over 27 years ago and has gone from strength to strength.
Students also participate in two weeks of work experience at level 5 and 6 in a variety of roles often going on to work in TV Stations, Film and Video production companies, Post Production companies, Multimedia/Advertising companies. Freelance Sound Designers, Music and Picture Editors, Production Designer/Art Director, Location Sound Recordist, Documentary Researcher, Documentary Filmmaker, and Film Reviewer.
Students and Graduate have been successful in screening work produced on the course and after graduation often winning awards at many international film festivals often winning awards.
