Graduates of the BA programme in TV, Radio & New Media Broadcasting go on to work in all areas of TV and Radio including web-based broadcasting. With an ideal mix of theory, practice and technology, the programme covers all areas of broadcasting from concept creation, programme production to broadcast and distribution. Their graduates are well grounded in areas of broadcast management which equips them to move quickly into management and editorial roles, and also operate as freelance producers.

Munster Technological University understands that the broadcasting environment is currently in a huge state of flux and as such the programme puts our students at the forefront of this change. Through the New Media aspects of the course our students are telling stories through channels such as social media and mobile platforms.

The facilities available at MTU include a recently upgraded TV studio and radio studio (with FM broadcasting licence), sound recording studio and surround sound facility. There are a suite of dedicated labs that are used solely by our media and broadcasting students. In the third year of the programme our students go on work placement for a complete semester. Through our extensive media work placement experience we have a large database of employers both home and abroad that range from independent production companies to state broadcasters. If your focus is more academic you can avail of our links with international universities that take students on research placements (UPF Barcelona 2013).

The programme in TV, Radio & New Media Broadcasting also sets up the graduate to go on to further education, whether in our own MA in Creative Media or any other broadcasting or media based postgraduate programme.

For more information on the programme contact phillip.doyle@mtu.ie or visit the MTU website for more details on the BA (Hons) TV, Radio & New Media Broadcasting programme and similar MTU media courses BA (Hons) Music Technology and BA (Hons) Creative Writing for Digital Media.

Education and Training Profile:

"Our most successful students generally engage in extra-curricular productions either outside of the college or through the various societies, most often the radio soc and the TV/Video soc," said Phillip Doyle, Department of Creative Media and Information Technology, Tralee.

Munster Technological University offers courses in TV & video production, radio production and web-based media skills from encoding media for web delivery to podcasting, blogging and the effective use of social media.

"Our course recognises the changing models of 'broadcasting' and the content that is made for new forms of transmission," Mr Doyle said. "We offer theoretical and practical training that equips the student to not only react to contemporary industry trends but also be the driving force behind these changes. At an institutional level, we have many external partnerships that enhance the student's learning experience locally, nationally and internationally with FÁS [now Screen Training Ireland], Radio Kerry and the TAMK institute in Finland, to name a few."

As part of the Department of Creative Media and computing, students have access to lecturers from a variety of fields in TV and video, new media production, and radio-based subjects.

When the students reach fourth year, they form groups of three to four people for the production of their major projects in TV, radio, new media, interactive multimedia or music technology. Many also go on to study for the MA in Creative Media, where they will continue to develop their skills under external mentors from the industry.

Available facilities include an art/multimedia/visual lab, dedicated studio spaces, a visual studio, recording studio, electronics workshop, TV studio, radio broadcasting studio, and a multimedia studio.
