‘Duffy’s Cut’ To Premiere at Stranger Than Fiction

21 Sep 2006 :

The World Premiere of ‘The Ghosts of Duffy’s Cut’, a new documentary from Irish filmmakers Stephen Rooke and Ruán Magan, will take place at the IFI during the Stranger Than Fiction Festival next Friday (29th Sept).

Shot on High Def, the 52 minute historical film examines the mysterious events of April 1832, when 57 young Irishmen left the port of Derry in search of a better life in America. Landing in Philadelphia they found work building one of the new world's earliest stretches of railroad and a mere six weeks later, all 57 men were dead, buried in an unmarked mass grave in a valley known today as Duffy’s Cut.

The film reveals the true story of the men who are said to haunt this stretch of the American railroad – “an extraordinary story of exploitation, bigotry, neglect and the dark side of the American Dream”.

US Lutheran minister, Frank Watson, the man who uncovered the mystery, will be a special guest at the screening which will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

‘The Ghosts of Duffy’s Cut’ is a Tile Films production.
