IFTA winning writer/director Frank Berry latest feature film Aisha has been named among the Official Selections for this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

Irish short film Lamb, written and directed by Sinead O’Loughlin and produced by Lara Hickey, has also been revealed within the highly anticipated line-up.

Aisha stars actors Letitia Wright and Josh O’Connor, and will receive its World Premiere in New York at the festival in June. The emotive drama is selected as part of the festival’s Spotlight Narrative strand, which features anticipated premieres from acclaimed filmmakers and performers, acting as a launching pad for the most buzzworthy new films.

Aisha charts the experiences of a young Nigerian woman as she seeks international protection in Ireland. Caught in limbo for years in Ireland's immigration system, Aisha Osagie (Wright) develops a friendship with former prisoner Conor Healy (O'Connor) who she meets at one of the accommodation centres. Aisha and Conor's growing friendship soon looks to be short lived as Aisha's future in Ireland comes under threat.

"We are all thrilled that AISHA will have its world premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Festival,” said writer and director Frank Berry, when reacting to the news of Aisha’s selection. “It’s been a very special experience making this film with an extraordinary cast and crew, and we’re really looking forward to sharing it with audiences."

Aisha follows Berry’s 2018 IFTA Best Film-winning drama Michael Inside and will see the continued collaboration between the Irish director and Subotica Production (Michael Inside) with Tristan Orpen Lynch, Aoife O'Sullivan, and Donna Eperon producing. Park Pictures’ Sam Bisbee (Truffle Hunters) will also produce.

The film was developed and financed by Screen Ireland, BBC Film, RTE and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland in association with Park Pictures, Wavelength and World of Ha Productions. Executive producers include Rose Garnett for BBC Film, Hallee Adelman, Ivy Herman, Jenifer Westphal, Joe Plummer, Lance Acord, Jackie Kelman Bisbee, Wendy Neu, William Byerley and George Rush. Production leads include cinematographer Tom Comerford (Herself), editor Colin Campbell (The Hole in the Ground) and production designer Tamara Conboy (Once).

Irish short film Lamb is also in Official Selection at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, in the festival’s short film programme. Chosen out of a record-breaking 7,200 short film submissions, Lamb is supported by Screen Ireland as part of its Focus Shorts scheme for emerging filmmakers with bold and original voices.

Written and directed by Sinead O’Loughlin, an ordinary day takes a sinister turn for a woman and her child when a stranger walks into their isolated rural home. The film is produced by Lara Hickey for Copper Alley Productions.

In its 21st edition this year, the Tribeca Film Festival 2022 will feature 110 feature films from 150 filmmakers across 40 countries.

The Tribeca Film Festival will take place in New York from June 8th to the June 19th, 2022.
