The first episode of the third and final series of Lisa McGee’s critically acclaimed Northern Irish comedy returned to Channel 4 this Tuesday with a special cameo appearance from Liam Neeson.

Airing on Tuesday at 9:15pm on Channel 4, Derry Girls will once again follow Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland) and friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and Michelle’s tag along English cousin, aka The Wee English Fella, James (Dylan Llewellyn).

The series also stars Tommy Tiernan as Erin’s long-suffering father Gerry, Tara Lynne O’Neill as Erin’s mother Mary, Ian McElhinney as Granda Joe, Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah, and Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael, the straight-talking Headmistress of Lady Immaculate College, where the group attend.

In the first episode of season three, the find themselves being questioned by the Taken star following an incident that sees the gang arrested on the grounds of their school following a suspected burglary.

Derry Girl creator Lisa McGee tweeted during the show confirming Neeson’s cameo. “Thanks for watching lads! Our code name for Liam during the shoot was ‘ the big fella’ arguably quite an easily cracked code,” said McGee. “What an honour to have him in our wee show. Our very own Northern Star.”

Neeson has since released a statement following the release of the episode: “I was delighted to be able to play a wee part of the final series of Derry Girls. I’m a huge fan of the series, the talented Lisa McGee’s incredible writing and the superb ensemble cast.”

“It’s such a unique and special show with real heart and amazing to see the lives of ordinary, funny people living in Northern Ireland during The Troubles played out in a Channel 4 comedy,” the legendary actor added. “It was lovely to be back filming there and having fun with them all.”

The comedy is the creation of acclaimed writer Lisa McGee who has mined her own experiences to create a candid, one-of-a-kind, family-centred comedy. In series three, viewers will see that while Northern Ireland is growing up, this gang of eejits certainly aren’t anytime soon.

While there’s hope in the air that The Troubles may finally be over their troubles, the gang are only just getting started as they get ever closer to “adulthood”.

The series was commissioned for Channel 4 by Director of Programmes Ian Katz, Head of Comedy Fiona McDermott and Commissioning Editors Jack Bayles and Laura Riseam.

Derry Girls is written by Lisa McGee. Caroline Leddy (The InbetweenersFriday Night DinnerLondon Irish), Liz Lewin (London IrishCrashingI Hate Suzie), Jimmy Mulville and Lisa McGee are executive producers with Brian Falconer (Ordinary Love) producing and Michael Lennox (Endeavour) directing.

Derry Girls is a commission for Hat Trick Productions and is a showcase of creative talent from Northern Ireland, entirely set and made locally with funding from Northern Ireland Screen.

Derry Girls continues next Tuesday on Channel 4 at 9:15pm.
