Dancing With The Stars wins at inaugural Royal Television Society Ireland Awards
31 Mar 2021 : News Desk
Dancing With The Stars
ShinAwil’s Dancing With The Stars was among the nine winners in last night’s inaugural RTS Ireland Television Awards 2021, which was hosted virtually on Virgin Media One on Tuesday night.

Other RTS Ireland Television Award winners for 2021 included RTÉ Investigates - Inside Ireland's Covid Battle, Poolbeg Productions for New Gaels, and Tyrone Productions for David Brophy’s Unsung Heroes, all broadcast on RTÉ.

Dara Ó Briain, who received the BAI Outstanding Contribution Award on the night, poked fun at the selection process behind his award. “They say awards voted for by the public but no, an award that’s chosen for you by a shadowy committee of industry insiders, with no accountability, promoting the first year of their awards - that, that is the award that really means something.”

“That’s why I’m very happy to receive the Royal Television Society of Ireland Outstanding Achievement Award,” the veteran TV host said while holding a dinosaur toy as his trophy.

Element Pictures hit drama Normal People picked up Best Drama. Accepting the award on behalf of Element Pictures producer Emma Norton described what a “total joy” it was to work with so many extraordinarily talented people including “our perfect Marianne & Connell” portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.

“Congratulations to all those who were nominated and who were selected as winners. But in such an extraordinarily difficult year for all those who work in the creative industries, we would like to pay a special tribute to the resilience and talent of all those who work in the television industry, on all sides of the camera. We salute your excellence,” said speaking after the broadcast RTS Ireland Television Awards committee chairperson Niall Cogley.

This is the latest initiative of the Republic of Ireland Centre of Royal Television Society, which has been operating since 1996. RTS Ireland organises a range of other events and awards every year including the awards ceremony for student productions in the categories of Drama, Short Form, Comedy, Animation, Factual and Craft Skills.
