NI Screen, BBC Drama and Element offer Trainee opportunity for a Script Editor

Element Pictures' hit show Normal People.
Northern Ireland Screen, BBC Drama Commissioning and Element Pictures, and supported by ScreenSkills HETV Training Fund, is recruiting a Trainee Script Editor for a one year paid placement opportunity.

The placement will be a combination of full-time employment within the script department of a local production company and will include short courses and mentoring. The placement will be focused on television drama but may also include aspects of film development.

The placement will be based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and the participant will be expected to base themselves in Northern Ireland for the duration of the scheme.

Element Pictures is run by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. With offices in Dublin, London and Belfast, Element’s activities encompass production, distribution, and exhibition. Recent productions include Yorgos Lanthimos’ Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA winning The Favourite and Lenny Abrahamson's Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA winning Room.

Previous productions include all of Lenny Abrahamson’s films Adam and Paul, Garage, Frank, What Richard Did, Room and most recently The Little Stranger and Yorgos Lanthimos’ English language films The Lobster (Jury Prize, Cannes) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer as well as Sebastián Lelio’s Disobedience. Current film productions include Phyllida Lloyd’s Herself, Sean Durkin’s The Nest starring Jude Law and Carrie Coon for BBC Films/FilmNation, Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir: Part II, and Nick Rowland’s Calm With Horses.

Element’s current television productions include Emmy nominated Normal People, a 12x30 mins series for BBC in association with Hulu based on Sally Rooney’s acclaimed novel, directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald. Element Pictures are currently adapting Rooney’s other novel Conversations with Friends for a 12-part series for BBC. Other television productions include Dublin Murders, an 8-part series for BBC and Starz. 

Other notable productions include Rosie by Paddy Breathnach (2018), Darren Thornton’s debut feature A Date for Mad Mary (2016), Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall (2014) and The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006) and The Guard by John Michael McDonagh (2011). TV productions include Red Rock (TV3, 2015), Charlie (RTE, 2015), and Quirke (RTE/BBC, 2013).

Element also runs a distribution company in Ireland as well as the Light House Cinema in Dublin and Pálás Cinema in Galway. Element Pictures announced a first look production deal with Fox Searchlight in September 2018.
