Belfast Film Festival cancelled amid Coronavirus concerns as A Bend In The River sells out
13 Mar 2020 :
The Colin Brodericks’ film had sold out at its world premiere at the Belfast Film Festival before the entire festival was postponed due to recent developments with the Coronavirus pandemic.

A Bend in the River is the story of a writer who returns to Ireland, after spending twenty-five years in New York, to confront the ghosts of his past. To make sense of the Northern Ireland he remembers as a child in comparison to the place he finds upon his return still minus a united Ireland.

Speaking about the cancellation of the festival, the film's director Colin Broderick commented:

“First off; I feel badly for all the wonderful people at The Belfast Film Festival who have worked so hard to create a very special 20th anniversary occasion,” said Director Colin Broderick, when speaking with IFTN. “But of course canceling the film festival in light of such serious health risk is absolutely the correct response.”

“On a personal level, it’s a bittersweet honour to have sold out our World Premiere screening of A Bend in the River, in record time, given that we also get to announce in the same breath that the screening has been postponed until further notice. It’s fitting that A Bend in the River, a movie that deals with Irish identity, and issues of immigration and nationality, should be caught in the crosswinds of such a turbulent storm. It feels timelier than ever. I appreciate all the incredible support for our movie and wish everyone safe passage through these difficult times. We look forward to celebrating with you at a screening in the very near future.”

Producer Julie Ryan added: “We’re disappointed we don’t get to premiere in Belfast in April. The team in Belfast have been so helpful in shepherding us through the process. Selling out within a week of going on sale was brilliant news for us, especially to know there is a thirst for this story.”

“It’s a challenging time for all industries right now but especially for independent films as we rely on festival exposure. We’re looking forward to coming back to Belfast in the autumn and fingers crossed everyone can join us again."

Refunds will be processed for all screenings over the next few days. All details will be on the Belfast Film Festival in the coming days – here.

Filmed in County Tyrone, the film is directed by Colin Broderick (Emerald City) and produced by Julie Ryan for MK1 Studios (There You’ll Find Me).

A Bend in the River stars former professional boxer John Duddy and IFTA nominated Kathy Kiera Clarke (Derry Girls), supported by IFTA winner John Connors (Cardboard Gangsters) and Nicola Boyle. DOP on the project is Shane Kelly (Oscar nominated film Boyhood), with music composed by Colm Mac Con Iomaire.
