Oscar Shortlist: SSVFX team involved in two Visual Effects projects
19 Dec 2019 : Nathan Griffin
Robert De Niro, Al Pachino and Ray Romano.
Sci-fi, adventure film Captain Marvel and Martin Scorsese’s gangster-drama The Irishman have been shortlisted in the Visual Effects category for the Academy Awards; both contenders include work from Irish company SSVFX helmed by Visual Effects Supervisor Ed Bruce.

The VFX shortlist was determined by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. The 10 films are Alita: Battle Angel, Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Cats, Gemini Man, The Irishman, The Lion King, 1917, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Terminator: Dark Fate.

"It is incredibly exciting and a proud moment to see 2 of this year’s SSVFX films represented in the Visual Effects 2020 Oscar's shortlist," said Ed Bruce, Head of SSVFX and a Visual Effects Supervisor on The Irishman & Captain Marvel, when speaking with IFTN.

"We have such a fantastic crew here that really enjoyed De-Aging Samuel Jackson's Fury character into the mid-1990s in Captain Marvel. De-Aging is one of our specialities and it is great to showcase our team’s talents on two of the shortlisted films this year.

The team in SSVFX worked as a partner vendor with ILM on Martin Scorsese's epic The Irishman, looking after a significant amount of the film's innovative visual effects.

"The Irishman has been such a huge project to be part of. We were delighted to work as a partner vendor, for over 14 months with Pablo Helman's team in ILM, working for one of the greatest directors ever. I can't begin to thank enough our talented team that contributed to Marty's masterpiece. The work completed this year is something very, very special."

The SSVFX crew will now wait until all members of the Visual Effects Branch have nominated their five films for final Oscar consideration. Each member of the Visual Effects Branch is invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films online or to attend satellite bake-off screenings in January 2020.

The shortlist for nine categories including International Film, Documentary, VFX, Score, Song and Shorts was announced late on Monday, December 16th.

Gaza, Ireland’s entry for Best International Feature Film, missed the cut with The Painted Bird (Czech Republic), Truth and Justice (Estonia), Les Misérables (France), Those Who Remained (Hungary), Honeyland (North Macedonia), Corpus Christi (Poland), Beanpole (Russia), Atlantics (Senegal), Parasite (South Korea), and Pain and Glory (Spain) making up the ten shortlisted from a total of ninety-one eligible entries in the category.

“Glasgow” from Wild Rose has been shortlisted for Best Music (Original Song), which is performed by Kerry native Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl, Taboo). The ten songs were chosen by members of the Music Branch from a selection of seventy-five entries submitted to the category.

Nominations for the 92nd Oscars will be announced on Monday, January 13, while the Academy Awards themselves will be handed out on Sunday, February 9.
