Locations Highlight: Mary Immaculate College, Co. Limerick
2017-02-13 9:00:00 :
Mary Immaculate College has many advantages as a filming location including a large selection of historic and contemporary facilities set on its leafy, 25 acre campus a short walk from Limerick City centre.

Whether shooting school or university scenes, theatrical or sporting scenes, MIC offers a mix of past and present that makes it truly unique.

The College was founded in 1898 and its imposing Foundation Building, with its timeless fixtures and fittings, is still in use. This building includes ‘old-school’ classrooms and a Halla, a period boardroom and parlour, a 1950s residential block, an art-room/display space with character and a wonderful chapel (c. 1906) as well as a bright, airy restaurant and main reception.

As well as the older buildings, the College has relatively new additions like the 4,400 square metre TARA Building—encompassing the professional standard 510 seat, Lime Tree Theatre—and the Tailteann sports complex. TARA has a range of lecture rooms, tiered lecture theatres and simulated classrooms (primary school teaching is a course offered here). The Forum, a series of steps extending from ground to first floor level, is a common area where people can gather and sit; this architectural feature is out of the ordinary.

The Tailteann sports complex has a 743 square metre gym with bleacher seating for 500 spectators, and two smaller teaching gyms, which are used as venues for dance and other sports. There are two playing fields, a running track and tennis courts on-site. Also on-campus is Summerville House, an 18th century building with a wealth of original features which is used for classes and tutorials. MIC has a fully-equipped student radio station, Wired FM too. On the adjacent postgraduate campus, the centrepiece is the former Mount Convent building.

Limerick is conveniently located 80 minutes’ drive from Galway, 90 minutes from Cork and just over two hours from Dublin. The College is a 25 minute drive from Shannon Airport, within easy access to the M7 motorway but close to the main city rail & bus station. There are three, four and five star hotels close to MIC.

Mary Immaculate College is one of a kind—a third level institution with a rich history and a vibrant present—and its versatile amenities are ideal for myriad types of filming. Media & Communications Studies are offered as part of its BA degree and so production companies and filmmakers will have plenty of willing and able volunteers to assist them in their project.
