TG4 documentary nominated for major archive film award

‘Lorg na gCos: Súil Siar ar Mise Éire’
TG4’s ‘Lorg na gCos: Súil Siar ar Mise Éire’, which concerns the making of Irish masterpiece ‘Mise Éire’ (an examination of Irish society in the years surrounding the 1916 Rising) has been nominated for a Focal award recognising excellence in archive films.

The documentary, which translates as ‘Finding The Footprints - A Look Back At Mise Éire’ has been recognised in the category for ‘Best Use of Footage in an Arts Production’ at the 10th annual Focal International Awards, set to take place in London on 2 May.

Director of Photography Fergal O’Hanlon received an IFTA nomination this year for his work on the documentary, which focuses upon Mise Éire’s director, George Morrison, as he recounts his experiences in assembling one of the most important works in Irish film history.

Colm Bairéad, Director of ‘Lorg na gCos’, spoke of his delight at the nomination, praising the assistance of staff at the Irish film archive and the generous co-operation of Mise Éire’s director, George Morrison.

A cultural revelation upon its theatrical release in 1960, ‘Mise Éire’ was not only the first feature-length Irish language film but also an invaluable historical record of three decades of political change in the country from the 1890s to 1918.

It broke all box office records in the 1960s, as tens of thousands of Irish cinema-goers saw their own history represented in visual form onscreen for the first time.

Produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi and edited by Bernard Clarke, ‘Lorg na gCos’ was first broadcast on TG4 last December and includes contributions from surviving members of the original ‘Mise Éire’ production team.

A newly-recorded rendition of Mise Éire’s original score by Seán Ó Riada was conducted by his son Peadar Ó Riada and the National Symphony Orchestra for the TG4 documentary.

A Midas Productions and Colm Bairéad Ltd. co-production, ‘Lorg na gCos’ was filmed between July and September 2011 in Dublin, Cork, Donegal, Derry and London.
