Daily Bite: Oscar-nominee Nora Ephron dies at 71

In today’s Daily Bite, sad news of Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director Nora Ephron’s passing; the board of New Corp are planning to split their operations and BAFTA changes its voting system.

Writer/ director Nora Ephron dies at 71… Oscar-nominated writer/ director Nora Ephron has passed away in New York at the age of 71. Ephron, who was Oscar-nominated for writing ‘Silkwood,’ ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ died of complications from myelodysplasia, a blood disorder also called preleukemia, which was diagnosed six years ago. She directed eight films, the most recent of which was 2009's ‘Julie and Julia’ starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

News Corp expected to announce split…The board of News Corporation are due to meet today to discuss plans to separate its TV and film operations from the print ones. The split is expected to be made public tomorrow (Thursday). Rupert Murdoch is expected to remain CEO of entertainment-focused News Corp while someone else would run day-to-day affairs at the print company. News Corp’s TV and film assets include the Fox network and 20th Century Fox.

BAFTA to change voting system… BAFTA has announced a major revamp of its voting system for next year's British Academy Film Awards, according to Variety. There will now only be two rounds of polling, instead of three. Previously, the first round of voting, with a deadline in early January, resulted in a longlist of 15 contenders in each category. This was then narrowed down to five nominees in the second round a couple of weeks later, with the winners chosen in the third round. But this year, the first round will choose the five nominees, with a voting deadline on January 4, and the second round in early February will decide the winners.

If you watch one trailer today… Sky One are set to air ‘Sinbad’ next week, which underwent post-production at Egg in Dublin. Here’s an interview on the set of the series with Irish actress Orla Brady.
