Daily Bite: Twickenham Film Studios Gets Lifeline

News that a mystery buyer has come into save world famous London film studio Twickenham has given staff there a lifeline; the announcement of the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or jury and a massive one-day haul at the box-office by ‘Avengers Assemble’ are amongst the international news stories in today’s Daily Bite.

Twickenham Film Studios gets lifeline…. London’s Twickenham Film Studios has been given a lifeline, according to The Guardian, who are reporting that a sale has been agreed to save the site of the world-famous studio. The studios have not revealed who the buyer is, however, they have confirmed that a non-returnable deposit of €76,000 (£100,000) has been put down on the purchase. The studio is one year away from its centenary and has hosted a number of classic films including ‘A Hard Days Night’, ‘The Italian Job’ and ‘Blade Runner’.

Cannes’ Palme d'Or jury announced…. Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is amongst the jurors who will decide on this year’s Palme d'Or winner in Cannes. Headed up by Italian producer Nanni Moretti (The Son’s Room), the panel includes British writer and director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank); French actress Emmanuelle Devos (Read My Lips); fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier; Oscar-winning writer/director Alexander Payne (Sideways); German actress Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds); Palestinian actor Hiam Abbass (Lemon Tree) and Haiti-born director Raoul Peck (Lumumba). Cannes begins on May 16.

Avengers Assemble pulls in €9.5m in one-day…. With Irishman Seamus McGarvey serving as cinematographer, the team behind ‘Avengers Assemble’ are celebrating after the blockbuster pulled in a hefty $12.6m in just one day. The film opened yesterday in Australia, France and south-east Asia. It scored the second biggest opening day in history in Australia, pulling in an estimated $6m, before delivering the biggest opening day of all time in Taiwan ($1.4m); the Philippines ($1.3m) and New Zealand ($894,000). It opens in Ireland today before opening in America on May 4.
