New Short Film Awards
22 Mar 2001 :
The European Coordination of Film Festivals and Jameson Irish Whiskey are proud to present the Jameson Short Film Awards, a joint initiative worth 300,000 euros over the next 3 years.

A major new award for short film directors, the JAMESON SHORT FILM AWARDS will be presented annually at eight European film festivals, representing the best in creative contemporary European cinema, with the potential to reach a European audience and. All fiction short films in the national selection will be eligible for the award, which will be decided by the jury of the competition. Each prize has a cash value of 6,000 euros, making the JAMESON SHORT FILM AWARDS one of the most significant award on the festival circuit.

The awards will rotate between the Festivals of the Coordination, including the Murphy’s Cork Film Festival in October 2001, giving many festivals the opportunity to introduce a prize for the first time or boost the endowment of their prizes. The rotation of the awards will ensure that short films are presented to the largest audiences within Europe. In addition, Jameson will match the value of each prize with the payment of a cash sum to the Coordination.

In 2001, the first ever JAMESON SHORT FILM AWARDS will be presented at the following festivals:

Finland Tampere Short Film Festival, Tampere (7-11 March)
Germany Filmfest Dresden, Dresden (17-22 April)
Spain Festival Internacional de Cine - Cinema Jove, Valencia (16-23 June)
Portugal Festival Internacional de Curtas-Metragens, Vila do Conde (3-8 July)
Ireland Murphy’s Cork Film Festival, Cork (14-21 October)
Italy Torino Film Festival, Turin (15-23 November)
UK Brief Encounters, Bristol (14-18 November)
France Festival Tous Courts, Aix en Provence (26 November - 1 December).

The European Coordination of Film Festivals and Jameson Irish Whiskey began their association in 1999, with the launch of “15 by 15: The European Film Heritage” a programme of 15 films chosen by 15 directors, now touring festivals across Europe. Furthermore a three-year partnership for the setting up of Jameson Clubs at festivals of the Coordination and at key industry events is being implemented. 12 Jameson Clubs were set up in 2000, and it is envisaged to bring this number to 18 in 2001.

Stefano Della Casa, Chairman of the European Coordination of Film Festivals, said:

“The Jameson Short Film Awards will benefit the winning filmmakers, as well as raising the profile of the films amongst the industry, the press and the public. This major new development of the partnership with Jameson is a perfect illustration of the European Coordination of Film Festivals' concrete initiatives to assist member festivals with their promotion of European cinema".

Martin Riley, International Marketing & Sales Director, Jameson Irish Whiskey, said:

“Jameson has been successfully involved in cinema in the past, having recognised that there are a high number of cinema and short film enthusiasts among its consumers. The creation of the Jameson Short Film Awards is evidence of our commitment to contribute to the ongoing development of cinema, and in particular to the re-emergence of short film. Jameson’s current proposition is to adopt a positive attitude to time, or to make time to enjoy the pleasures of life. It is expressed in the question “What’s the Rush?” and I feel that Jameson and short film represent an attractive association for people willing to take time out to watch a different and increasingly recognised cinema genre.”

For the European Coordination of Film Festivals, the JAMESON SHORT FILM AWARDS will enhance the ability of member festivals to award prizes, which present vital additional support for filmmakers and for European cinema.
