Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan

Julien Temple’s much-anticipated film Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan is set to open in Irish cinemas from December 4th. The theatrical release will kick off with a special cinema event on the night of December 4th when audiences will be treated to exclusive never-seen-before footage from MacGowan’s 60th birthday concert including performances from MacGowan and friends including Bono, Damien Dempsey, Glen Hansard, Lisa O’Neill, and Sharon Shannon.

Helmed by the multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed film, documentary, and music video director Julien Temple (Glastonbury, The Filth and the Fury, London: The Modern Babylon) and produced by Johnny Depp, Crock Of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan is a cinematic exploration of the legendary poet, punk and Pogue Shane MacGowan.

Combining interviews, previously unseen archive footage, and specially commissioned animations with an impressive soundtrack, the documentary details Shane’s explosive existence from his early days growing up in Ireland, to time spent on the mean streets of London and embracing the punk scene, to forming The Pogues.  We discover MacGowan’s passions, humour, and deep knowledge of music, history, spirituality, and popular culture. The film is a vision of the world through the eyes of the great punk poet himself and an intimate cast of close friends and family members, all channelled through Temple’s inimitable and eternally vibrant lens.

The documentary had its world premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in September where it won the Special Jury Prize and positive reviews. Crock Of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan was produced by Johnny Depp, Stephen Deuters, Stephen Malit, and Julien Temple for Infinitum Nihil, Nitrate Films, Hanway Films, BBC Music, and Warner Music Entertainment.  Wild Atlantic was the Irish co-producer on the project, which received funding from Screen Ireland.

A Girl from Mogadishu

Winner of the Cinema for Peace Women’s Empowerment Award at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival, this powerful and inspiring film is based on the true story of global gender-based violence activist, Ifrah Ahmed. The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins described the film as “a powerful story of courage, hope, and remarkable determination.”

Fleeing war-torn Somalia in 2006 for the United States, Ifrah is trafficked to Dublin, Ireland where she applies for asylum. A traumatic medical examination reveals the extent of her mutilation as a child. Traumatised by the memory, she channels the experience into a force for change and emerges as a formidable campaigner against Female Genital Mutilation at the highest political echelons in Ireland, Europe, and globally.

Starring Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder) as Ifrah Ahmed and Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) along with Orla Brady (Picard, Rose Plays Julie) and Somali icon, Maryam Mursal the film boasts an original score by Nitin Sawhney and its title track also features Quiet by Milck, the unofficial anthem of the 2017 USA Women’s March. Based on the recorded testimony of activist Ifrah Ahmed, it is written and directed by Mary McGuckian.

A Girl from Mogadishu is based on my story - but it is also the story of the 200 million women and girls worldwide who have suffered the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation,” said Ifrah Ahmed. “While the movie is intended to focus attention on the barbarity and scale of the practice, its ambition is also to empower all young women and girls to have the courage to stand up and speak out.”

Also, recipient of the Mill Valley 42nd edition World Cinema Award in the US, A Girl from Mogadishu has picked up a host of audience and jury awards during its international film festival run and will be released physically and virtually in Ireland by Eclipse Pictures.

Pixie

Shot on location in Northern Ireland, the film is led by rising British star Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Me Earl and the Dying Girl) who features alongside Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody, X-Men: Apocalypse) and Daryl McCormack (A Very English Scandal) with Colm Meaney (Layer Cake, Con Air), Dylan Moran (Black Books, Shaun of the Dead) and Oscar nominated and Emmy-winning actor Alec Baldwin (SNL, Still Alice). The Sligo-set film is an entertaining mix of dark comedy and crime thriller.

Directed by Barnaby Thompson (Kiss the Sky), the movie tells the tale of Pixie (Cooke), a young woman who wants to avenge her mother's death by plotting a heist. However, her plans go awry and she finds herself on the run with two young men (Hardy, McCormack) who are way out of their depth being chased across the Wild Irish countryside by gangsters. She has to pit her wits against everyone, taking on the patriarchy to claim the right to shape her own life.
